The Future of the Photo Book

The blog “Still Searching” is back from the summer break. Until the end of October Markus Hartmann, the former publishing director at Hatje Cantz, will go on a road trip through Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain and Portugal and think about the past, present and future of the photo book: “Bound to the treadmill of a busy book-publishing house there is scant time and peace of mind to focus on theories, texts, or ideas. Your mind is always focused on the books currently in the works, as well as the books that must be planned for the upcoming seasons. The title of this blog “Still Searching….” therefore applies perfectly to my current state of mind. My contributions to this blog will be less academic than the texts of my predecessors in this position and will consider photo books and related themes from an economic as well as from an idealistic point of view.”

Wie geht es weiter mit dem Fotobuch?

Der Blog „Still Searching“ ist zurück aus der Sommerpause. Bis Ende Oktober unternimmt Markus Hartmann, der ehemalige Programmdirektor von Hatje Cantz, eine Reise durch Deutschland, die Schweiz, Frankreich, Spanien, Portugal – und denkt dabei über die Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft des Fotobuchs nach: „Eingespannt ins hektische Verlagsgeschäft bleibt kaum Zeit und Ruhe um sich mit Theorien, Texten und Ideen zu beschäftigen. Man konzentriert sich auf die Bücher, die gerade produziert werden und diejenigen, die für die nächste Saison geplant sind. Der Blogtitel „Immer noch auf der Suche“ beschreibt deshalb meinen aktuellen Zustand perfekt. Meine Beiträge werden weniger akademisch sein als die Texte meiner Vorgänger/innen. Ich werde mich mit Fotobüchern und angrenzenden Themen aus einer ökonomischen, aber auch idealistischen Perspektive beschäftigen.“
