"The J Line"

WHITECONCEPTS is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Berlin of Italian artist Pietro Celesia. The exhibition, consisting of photography, video and sound installation by live musicians, represents a selection of Celesia’s artistic spectrum.

Based on an inspirational subway tour from legendary New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Wall Street, Pietro Celesia began exploring the different suburbs. The result of capturing the city on infrared film shows the city as in a dreamlike reality – a strong imagery rotating between spaces, energies and rhythms. While Miles Davis´ jazz was always accompanying his moves along the "J line", he felt as he was being on a journey through time as well as stuck in a vibrant present of a melting pot; its streets and tunes linked the present and the past with the architecture and visions of the American dream, immortalized by photographers and avant-garde filmmakers a long time ago.

For the show at WHITECONCEPTS gallery Pietro ‘s photographs are additioned by a soundtrack. "The J Line" music created by the young German jazz musicians Florian Menzel reflects on mirrors and echoes, the daydream-feel of the pictures. Usually in the band The Major Minors (The J Line track, 2015) - which won the German Film Prize (Deutscher Filmpreis) for the soundtrack of German blockbuster "Oh Boy" in 2013 - will be performing with Igor Spallati "The J Line" music live at the opening night.

Understanding architecture as a narration of society the "The J line" reflects on a city of immediacy, and of downright business, but also on a space of urban intimacy, where one can feel at ease, free of fear or tensions. Within the different media shown in this exhibition "The J line" manifests ideas of inter-connection, coexistence and interdependence or how Pietro describes his project: "The whole, however, can only exist because of all the parts."

WHITECONCEPTS freut sich, die erste Einzelausstellung des italienischen Künstlers Pietro Celesia in Berlin zu präsentieren. "J Line" verbindet das Interesse des Künstlers an der Architektur einer Stadt mit einer parallelen Faszination für Musik und Film. Basierend auf einer inspirierenden U-Bahn-Tour vom legendären New Yorker John F. Kennedy Flughafen zur Wall Street, erkundete Pietro Celesia die verschiedenen Vororte. Er hörte dabei die Jazz-Musik von Miles Davis und beschrieb es als eine Art Zeitreise, die ihm eine intime Sicht auf die vielen Spuren des amerikanischen Traumes gab, der vor langer Zeit durch "Weegee's New York City" oder "Manhattan" (einem der ersten amerikanischen Avantgardefilme) verewigt wurde.

Nach dem Studium der Architektur versteht der italienische Fotokünstler, der für seine Fotografien von Menschen und Natur bekannt ist, diese als eine Narration der Gesellschaft. Aufgenommen auf Infrarotfilm und in einer sehr eigenen Atmosphäre, sieht New York City in seinen Fotografien wie ein Schmelzpunkt zwischen verschiedenen Zeiten aus und zeigt seine dynamischen, lebendigen und kraftvollen Energien. Die Reflexion des Künstlers kreist zwischen einer Stadt der Unmittelbarkeit, der Geschäftigkeit aber auch von einem Ort der urbanen Intimität, an dem man sich wohl fühlen kann, frei von Angst und Spannungen.

Durch die Verwendung von verschiedenen Medien manifestiert "J Line" Ideen der Verbindung, Koexistenz und gegenseitigen Abhängigkeit, oder wie Pietro sein Projekt beschreibt: "Das Ganze kann jedoch nur wegen all seiner Bestandteile existieren."
