As always, the photography auction will cover a broad spectrum of historic, classical and contemporary photography. The 19th century works on offer include a portrait of the British poet Lord Alfred Tennyson taken in 1869 at his home in Freshwater by his friend Julia Margaret Cameron (lot 7, €2 – 2,500), as well as an assorted lot of photographs by Jean Pascal Sebah documenting the temples of 'Karnak'. The prints are in unusually fine condition (lot 4, €1,500). Rudolf Koppitz is represented by his most well-known image 'Bewegungsstudie', showing four graceful dancers, here in the form of a photogravure (lot 53, €5,000). Further highlights of classical 20th century photography include Germaine Krull's 'Panneau publicitaire, l'affiche de Nicolas fines bouteilles' from 1927 (lot 45, €3,000 - 4,000) and Ilse Bing's 'Pensionnat de Jeunes Filles' taken in 1935 (lot 46, €3,000 – 4,000).

German post-war photography is largely represented by works of the "fotoform" group, primarily Otto Steinert, from whom two images taken in Paris are to go under the hammer: 'Étude' from 1951 and 'Silhouettes de Paris' from 1949 (lot 95, €6,000 – 8,000 and lot 96 €8,000 – 10,000). Steinert's impressionist style image of windswept trees outside his window taken in 1956, which has previously been successfully sold twice by Lempertz, is once again on offer (lot 94, €8,000 – 10,000). A further fotoform icon is Peter Keetman's 'Treppe' (lot 92) which is estimated at €2,400. Ludwig Windstosser's oeuvre is represented by an image of a pipe taken in the Mannesmann factory, the close-up perspective of which gives it an abstract quality (lot 88, €2,000). Two unique, abstract 'chemigrams' by the Cologne photographer Chargesheimer and four pieces by the recently deceased artist Will McBride round off the works on offer from the early era of the federal republic.

French post-war photography is represented by three important prints by Henri Cartier-Bresson, which illustrate the remarkably broad spectrum of the internationally active Magnum photographer. His shot of 'Matera', taken in the Italian town in the early 1950s, presents an image of a place where time appears to stand still (lot 101, €2,000), and his portrait of 'A eunuch at the Imperial Court of Peking' is without doubt one of the artist's most significant works. The image of the aging eunuch presents a striking visual contrast to his charming portrait of 'Marilyn Monroe in Reno', which shows the actress on the set of her completed film "The Misfits" (lots 102 and 103, €9,000 – 12,000 each). The famous portrait of Ernesto Che Guevara, showing him in a relaxed pose and smoking a cigar, was taken by Cartier-Bresson’s colleague at the Magnum agency René Burri and is here available as an early print (lot 139, €2,400 – 2,800). Bill Brandt's elegant female nude 'London' will be familiar to fans of this photographer as the cover image of his monograph (lot 71, €7,000 – 9,000). The highlights of American photography include Diane Arbus' impressive portrait 'Puerto Rican Woman with a Beauty Mark' (Lot 124, €10,000 – 15,000) and Joseph Szabo's humorous snapshot 'Lifeguard's Dream', which he took on Jones Beach in 1972 (lot 121, €6,500). Thomas Hoepker's fascinating and unsettling 'View of Manhattan from Williamsburg, Brooklyn taken on 11th September 2001' completes the classic works on offer (lot 172, €6,000 – 8,000).

PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTION
The works on offer as part of the contemporary art auction on 30th May include Thomas Struth's large format image of 'Hilo Street, Jiyu Gaoka, Tokyo' from 2003 (lot 561, €30,000 – 40,000) and Thomas Demand's finely coloured but profoundly disturbing image 'Junior Suite' in which the photographer creates a replica of the hotel room in which the singer Whitney Houston died as a commentary on the indiscretion of the modern media (lot 560, €50,000 – 70,000). The impressive portrait 'Anastasia' with Rococo hairstyle and black mask is the work of the Netherlandish artist Inez van Lamsweerde (lot 547, €22,000 – 25,000).

Wie üblich deckt die Auktion ein breites Spektrum an historischen, klassischen und zeitgenössischen Photographien ab. Aus dem Bereich der Photographie des 19. Jahrhunderts hervorzuheben ist ein Portrait des britischen Dichters 'Lord Alfred Tennyson', das die mit ihm befreundete Julia Margaret Cameron im Jahr 1869 an ihrem Wohnsitz in Freshwater aufnahm (Lot 7, € 2.000/2.500), sowie ein aus sieben Aufnahmen bestehendes Konvolut des Photographen Jean Pascal Sebah, das die Tempelanlage von 'Karnak' dokumentiert. Die Abzüge bestechen durch ihren außergewöhnlich guten Erhaltungszustand (Lot 4, € 1.500). Rudolf Koppitz ist mit seiner wohl bekanntesten Aufnahme, der 'Bewegungsstudie' vier graziler Tänzerinnen vertreten, die hier als Photogravüre vorliegt (Lot 53, € 5.000). Weitere Highlights der klassischen Photographie des 20. Jahrhunderts sind Germaine Krulls 'Panneau publicitaire, l’affiche de Nicolas fines bouteilles' von 1927 (Lot 45, € 3.000/4.000) sowie Ilse Bings 1935 entstandene Aufnahme 'Pensionnat de Jeunes Filles' (Lot 46, € 3.000/4.000).

Die deutsche Photographie der Nachkriegszeit ist vor allem durch Photographen der "fotoform"-Gruppe repräsentiert: Allen voran zu nennen ist Otto Steinert, von dem zwei in Paris aufgenommene Motive, seine 'Étude' von 1951 sowie die 'Silhouettes de Paris' aus dem Jahr 1949 aufgerufen werden (Lot 95, € 6.000/8.000 und Lot 96, € 8.000/10.000). Auch sein impressionistisch anmutendes Bild der vom Wind bewegten Bäume vor seinem Fenster aus dem Jahr 1956, das bereits zweimal erfolgreich bei Lempertz versteigert wurde, ist wieder Teil der Offerte (Lot 94, € 8.000/10.000). Eine weitere "fotoform"-Ikone stammt von Peter Keetman. Der spätere Abzug seiner 'Treppe' (Lot 92) ist mit € 2.400 bewertet. Ludwig Windstossers Photographie der durch die Nahsicht abstrakt wirkenden, in den Hallen der Mannesmann Werke aufgenommenen Rohre liegt bei € 2.000 (Lot 88). Zwei abstrakte, unikate 'Chemigramme' des Kölner Photographen Chargesheimer sowie 4 Photographien des kürzlich verstorbenen Will McBride (Lots 155 – 158, € 700 – 1.500/2.000) runden das Angebot aus den Jahren der jungen Bundesrepublik ab.

Die französische Nachkriegsphotographie ist mit drei Aufnahmen Henri Cartier-Bressons prominent vertreten, die zugleich den bemerkenswerten Radius des weltweit tätigen Magnum-Photographen dokumentieren: Seine in den frühen fünfziger Jahren im italienischen 'Matera' entstandene Aufnahme gewährt Einblick in einen Ort, an dem die Zeit stehengeblieben zu sein scheint (Lot 101, € 2.500). Das Bild eines 'Eunuchen am kaiserlichen Hof in Peking' zählt zweifellos zu den wichtigsten Motiven Cartier-Bressons. Im starken visuellen Gegensatz zur Darstellung des gealterten Eunuchen steht sein liebliches Portrait von 'Marilyn Monroe in Reno', das die Schauspielerin am Set ihres letzten vollendeten Films, "The Misfits", zeigt (Lots 102 und 103, je € 9.000/12.000). Von seinem Magnum-Kollegen René Burri stammt das berühmte Portrait Ernesto Che Guevaras, das den Dargestellten in lässiger Pose mit Zigarre zeigt und hier als früher Abzug vorliegt (Lot 139, € 2.400/2.800). Bill Brandts eleganter, 'London' betitelter Frauenakt, dürfte den Anhängern des Photographen auch als Coverbild seiner maßgeblichen Werkmonographie ein Begriff sein (Lot 71, € 7.000/9.000). Zu den Höhepunkten der amerikanischen Photographie seit den 1960er Jahren zählen Diane Arbus' eindrückliches Portrait einer 'Puerto Rican Woman with a Beauty Mark' (Lot 124, € 10.000/15.000) sowie Joseph Szabos humoriger Schnappschuss 'Lifeguard's Dream', der ihm 1972 am Jones Beach gelang (Lot 121, € 6.500). Thomas Hoepkers ebenso fesselnder wie irritierender 'Blick von Williamsburg, Brooklyn, auf Manhattan, 11. September 2001' bildet den Abschluss der klassischen Offerte (Lot 172, € 6.000 – 8.000).

PHOTOGRAPHIE IN DER AUKTION ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNST
Zu den Photographien, die am 30. Mai im Rahmen der Auktion "Zeitgenössische Kunst" aufgerufen werden, zählen Thomas Struths großformatiges Bild der 'Hilo Street, Jiyu Gaoka, Tokyo' von 2003 (Lot 561, € 30.000/40.000) sowie Thomas Demands farblich ansprechendes, dabei verstörendes Bild 'Junior Suite', in dem der Künstler das Hotelzimmer der verstorbenen Whitney Houston nachinszeniert und damit die Indiskretion der heutigen Medienwelt reflektiert (Lot 560, € 50.000/70.000). Von der niederländischen Künstlerin Inez van Lamsweerde stammt das eindrückliche Portrait 'Anastasia' mit Rokoko-Frisur und schwarzer Maske (Lot 547, € 22.000 – 25.000).
