12th WestLicht Photo Auction

A collection of more than 150 Russian avant-garde works is the central focus of the coming auction, which takes place in Vienna on 12 June.

It features vintage prints by Alexander Rodchenko, Evgeny Chaldei, Max Alpert, Varvara Stepanova, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky and others which have never been offered for sale before.

One of the many highlights is Alexander Rodchenko’s photograph of Lilya Brik dated 1924 (Lot 189, estimated price 14,000 - 16,000 Euros). Brik was a stage director and sculptor and the lover of Futurist Vladimir Mayakovsky. Pablo Neruda once called her the "muse of the Russian avant-garde". Like all the other fifteen works by Rodchenko on offer, the famous portrait of the sculptor Anton Lavinsky (Lot 188, estimated price 8,000 – 10,000 Euros) was purchased directly from the artist’s estate.

Numerous leading works of the international and Austrian history of photography can be found among the offerings at the 12th WestLicht Photo Auction – at more than 300 lots, it is the largest WestLicht auction yet.

The title image of the catalogue, Auction Lot 142, is one of the most important icons of feminism and the Austrian post-war avant-garde: VALIE EXPORT, "Aktionshose: Genitalpanik" (Action Pants: Genital Panic), dated 1969, is offered as an extremely rare and large-format vintage print (Lot 142, estimated price 28,000 – 32,000 Euros).

In addition, Austrian photography is well-represented by a nude by the seaside by Rudolf Koppitz, fashion shots by Madame D’Ora, and works by Trude Fleischmann, Inge Morath and Ernst Haas.

2014 saw the first-time presentation of a sensation in terms of cultural history at the Photography Museum WestLicht: the erotic photographs of Alfons Walde. The world-famous landscape painter was revealed as a master photographer – with a strong focus on female nudes. He staged many motifs, from classical poses inspired by the tradition of art history to erotically charged scenes. These early black-and-white photographs are reminiscent of Egon Schiele and Koloman Moser. Four rare vintage prints from the artist’s estate are offered in the auction (Lots 11 to 14, estimated price 3,000 – 4,000 Euros each).

Another genre that is well-represented is reportage photography by Magnum members. With "Derrière la Gare Saint-Lazare" (Lot 69, estimated price 25,000 – 30,000 Euros), Henri Cartier-Bresson used his Leica to capture one of his most well-known motifs in 1932 Paris. The mysterious, surreal scene perfectly encapsulates the “decisive moment” in which a man tries to jump over a huge puddle on the Place de L’Europe in Paris. Cartier-Bresson, however, also influenced the world’s image of the great artist Henri Matisse, whom he portrayed. The photograph shows the great painter in 1944, ten years before his death yet already wheelchair-bound, amidst his beloved doves. The famous work (Lot 72, estimated price 7,000 – 9,000 Euros) will be auctioned as a very rare vintage print.

The central importance of Magnum members for 20th century photography is also proven by Werner Bischof’s Angkor Wat, Cambodia 1952 (Lot 85, estimated price 2,500 – 3,000 Euros), Robert Capa's picture of mourning women at a funeral for Italian partisans, Naples 1943, (Lot 82, estimated price 4,000 – 5,000 Euros) and photographs by Marc Riboud and the late René Burri, recently passed away.

A convolute of 92 works by Osvaldo Salas (1914-1992), who came to fame photographing the Cuban Revolution, transports us to Cuba. The gelatine silver prints signed on the reverse (Lot 66, estimated price 25,000 – 30,000 Euros) are sold directly from the photographer’s holdings. Five unusual portraits of Che Guevara and four of Fidel Castro stand out among the collection. In addition, there are street scenes and depictions of daily life in Cuba, and finally an interesting group of portraits of famous personalities including the National Poet Nicolás Guillén, Maurice Chevalier, Gabriel García Márquez, the boxing world champions Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson and Rocky Marciano, and Geraldine Chaplin.

Twelve albumen prints by John Thomson (1837-1921) hail from the earliest days of photography: taken around 1868, they document a China that has long vanished (Lot 1, estimated price 8,000 – 10,000 Euros). The photographs are characterized both by their exceptional quality and historical importance. They are among the earliest photographic documents of China ever.

Eine Sammlung von über 150 Werken aus der russischen Avantgarde bildet den Schwerpunkt der kommenden Auktion am 12. Juni in Wien.

Noch niemals angebotene Vintage-Prints von Alexander Rodtschenko, Jewgeni Chaldei, Max Alpert, Warwara Stepanowa, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky u.a. sind vertreten.

Eines der vielen Highlights ist Alexander Rodtschenkos Fotografie von Lilja Brik (Los 189, Schätzpreis € 14.000 - 16.000 Euro) aus dem Jahr 1924. Brik war Regisseurin, Bildhauerin und die Geliebte des Futuristen Wladimir Majakowksi. Pablo Neruda nannte sie die "Muse der Russischen Avantgarde".

Auch das berühmte Porträt des Bildhauers Anton Lavinsky (Los 188, Schätzpreis 8.000 - 10.000 Euro) wurde wie alle anderen 15 angebotenen Arbeiten Rodtschenkos direkt aus dessen Nachlass erworben.

Zahlreiche Spitzenwerke der internationalen und österreichischen Fotogeschichte finden sich im weiteren Angebot der, mit insgesamt über 300 Losen bisher umfangreichsten WestLicht Foto-Auktion.

Mit einem Akt am Meer von Rudolf Koppitz, Modeaufnahmen von Madame D’Ora, Arbeiten von Trude Fleischmann, Inge Morath und Ernst Haas ist die österreichische Fotografie darüber hinaus hervorragend vertreten.

2014 wurde eine kulturhistorische Sensation im Wiener Fotomuseum WestLicht erstmals präsentiert: Die erotische Fotografie von Alfons Walde. Der weltberühmte Landschaftsmaler entpuppt sich als Meister der Fotografie – mit Fokus auf dem weiblichen Akt. Seine Inszenierungen reichen von klassischen Posen aus der kunsthistorischen Tradition bis hin zu erotisch aufgeladenen Szenen. Diese frühen Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien erinnern an Egon Schiele und Koloman Moser. Vier seltene Vintage-Prints aus dem Künstlernachlass werden in der Auktion angeboten (Lose 11 – 14, Schätzpreis jeweils 3.000 - 4.000 Euro)

Besonders prominent ist die Reportagefotografie der Magnum-Mitglieder vertreten. Mit "Derrière la Gare Saint-Lazare" (Los 69, Schätzpreis 25.000 - 30.000 Euro) fing Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris 1932 eines seiner bekanntesten Motive mit der Leica ein. In der geheimnisvollen, surrealen Szene traf er perfekt den "entscheidenden Augenblick", in dem ein Mann auf dem Pariser Place de L’Europe mit einem Sprung eine riesige Wasserlacke zu überwinden versucht.

Cartier-Bresson hat aber auch das Bild des großen Künstlers Henri Matisse für die Nachwelt mit seinem Porträt stark geprägt. Die Fotografie zeigt den großen Maler 1944, zehn Jahre vor seinem Tod, bereits an den Rollstuhl gefesselt, inmitten seiner geliebten Tauben. Das berühmte Werk (Los 72, Schätzpreis, 7.000 - 9.000 Euro) gelangt in einem sehr seltenen Vintage-Print zur Auktion.

Die zentrale Bedeutung der Agentur Magnum für die Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts beweisen ebenso Werner Bischofs "Angkor Wat, Kambodscha 1952" (Los 85, Schätzpreis 2.500 - 3.000 Euro), Robert Capas Aufnahme trauernder Frauen auf einem Partisanenbegräbnis, Neapel 1943, (Los 82, Schätzpreis 4.000 - 5.000 Euro) und Fotografien von Marc Riboud und dem erst kürzlich verstorbenen René Burri.

Nach Kuba führt ein Konvolut von 92 Arbeiten des als Fotografen der kubanischen Revolution bekannt gewordenen Osvaldo Salas (1914–1992). Die auf der Rückseite signierten Silbergelatineabzüge (Los 66, Schätzpreis 25.000 - 30.000 Euro) stammen direkt aus seinem Besitz. Vor allem fünf außergewöhnliche Porträts von Che Guevara und vier von Fidel Castro stechen aus der Sammlung heraus. Daneben finden sich Straßenszenen und Darstellungen des alltäglichen Lebens in Kuba, schließlich eine interessante Gruppe von Porträts bekannter Persönlichkeiten, darunter Nationaldichter Nicolás Guillén, Maurice Chevalier, Gabriel García Márquez, die Boxweltmeister Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson und Rocky Marciano und Geraldine Chaplin.

Aus der Frühzeit der Fotografie und aus einem längst versunkenen China berichten zwölf Albumin-Abzüge von John Thomson (1837–1921), die um 1868 entstanden sind (Los 1, Schätzpreis 8.000 - 10.000 Euro). Die Aufnahmen zeichnen sich sowohl durch ihre außergewöhnliche Qualität als auch ihre historische Bedeutung aus. Sie zählen zu den frühesten fotografischen Dokumenten aus China.
