The top lot of the auction floats high above the rest of the works offered for sale: A widow in her bedroom, N.Y.C. by Diane Arbus. The photograph, taken in 1963, is estimated at € 100,000/150,000 (Lot 131). It is followed by the second motif by the photographer, Lady in a rooming house parlor, Albion, N.Y., of the same year. € 50,000/70,000 (lot 132). Arbus is often primarily perceived as a photographer whose interest pertains to people living on the fringes of society – in other words transvestites, people of stunted growth, mentally ill people, nudists and so on – despite also taking into account the seemingly “normal” existence of individuals that are well-off and firmly integrated into society.

The 14 photographs by August Sander from the estate of Inge Jansen, his former assistant, are also remarkable. The photographs show views of Cologne, the Siebengebirge and the Eifel and are estimated at up to € 8,000 (lots 41 – 54).

The famous Bäumchen [The Sapling] by Albert Renger-Patzsch, taken in 1929, is also counted among the highlights. The photograph belongs to Renger-Patzsch’s most productive and, from a historical perspective with regards to photography, most significant creative phase. The famous photograph of the young cherry tree in the bright light of early spring, taken in the area of Meißen in Saxony, was one of the photographer’s declared favourite motifs of which he developed accurate copies by hand on Kodak-Royal paper in order to give them to good friends and customers as presents. The present photograph is one of such rare, large-scale vintage prints, mounted under an original signed mat (Lot 33, € 20,000/30,000).

Henri Cartier-Bresson's atmospheric photograph Schwanensee, Bolschoi-Theater, Moskau has an estimated price of € 6,000/8,000 (Lot 99). Edward Weston's later gelatin silver print, made by Cole Weston, Nude (Charis in doorway, Santa Monica) from 1936 is estimated at the same price (lot 76). The most important early works in the auction include two pictorialist photographs by Heinrich Kühn, among them the bromoil Lotte und Hans Kühn from around 1908 (lot 13, € 3,500/4,500).

Robert Mapplethorpe is represented by his graphic Hyancinth from 1987 (lot 159, € 14,000), a large-scale photogravure on wove paper. Also worthy of a remark – as it has never been offered in an auction to date – is a group of four portraits by the photographer Joyce Baronio from her famous series 42nd street studio depicting women from the New York red light district. Joyce Baronio did not take the pictures of the sitters in their dimly lit working environment but in bright daylight in her New York studio (Lot 154-157, each € 2.000).

With his picture Blick von Williamsburg, Brooklyn, auf Manhattan, 11. September 2001, [view of Manhattan from Williamsburg Brooklyn, 11. September 2001], Thomas Höpker took one of the most controversial photographs of the burning World Trade Centre. A large-scale pigment print of the famous motif from an edition of 7 is on auction here (lot 185, € 15,000/20,000).

Collection Elke and Werner Zimmer. Reportage photographs 1945 - 1990
Apart from its regular photo catalogue, Lempertz also offers reportage photographs from the collection of the gallery owners Elke and Werner Zimmer, Düsseldorf, taken between 1945 and 1990. Yevgeni Chaldej, Arno Fischer, Rolf Gillhausen, Peter Leibing, Will McBride, Robert Lebeck, Stefan Moses and Barbara Klemm are among the photographers represented here. Starting with Chaldej’s famous photograph Sowjetischen Fahne auf dem Berliner Reichstag [Raising a flag over the Reichstag], taken on 2nd May 1945 (lot 203, € 1,400), the latest photographs are from Barbara Klemm documenting the fall of the Berlin wall and the celebrations on the occasion of the day of German unification on 3rd October 1990 (lots 241 – 249, each € 1,000). Aside from portraits of famous personalities, there are numerous pictures among the 47 lots which have significantly influenced our perception of the most important historic events as well as living conditions of the second half of the 20th century in both parts of Germany and which are therefore firmly embedded in the collective visual memory.

PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE AUCTION CONTEMPORARY ART + PHOTOGRAPHY
The available offers within the ‘Contemporary art’ auction on 28th November of contemporary photographs and photographic works are substantial with regards to their quality and scope. There is a slightly blurred photographic Selbstportrait by Gerhard Richter from 1965 - 1971 (lots 647/648, € 20,000/25,000). One of Andreas Gursky’s early works Schwimmbad/Teneriffa [Pool/Tenerife] is estimated at € 16,000/18,000 (Lot 663).

Hiroshi Sugimoto is represented by one of his famous cinema photographs: Ribidoux Drive-in, Ribidoux from 1993 is estimated at € 12,000/15,000. A two-part, untitled photographic work, comprising large-scale polaroids from the series Das Gold des Künstlers [Gold found by the Artists] by Marina Abramovic/Ulay from 1981 is valued at € 10,000/15,000.

Elger Esser’s almost abstract work Saint-Denis, Frankreich [Saint-Denis, France] is estimated at € 9,000/12,000, Michael Wesely’s time exposure of a still life titled Stilleben (26.10.-11.11.2011) with pomegranates in shimmering shades of red and pink at € 8,000/10,000. There are two interior photographs of libraries (Kloster Meherau, Bregenz I and ) by Candida Höfer with an estimated price of € 6,000/8,000 each (lots 774/775).

Weit über der Offerte schwebt das Spitzenlos der Auktion: A widow in her bedroom, N.Y.C. von Diane Arbus. Die 1963 entstanden Aufnahme ist mit einer Taxe von € 100.000 - 150.000 versehen (Lot 131). Das zweite Motiv der Photographin Lady in a roomimg house parlor, Albion, N.Y. aus demselben Jahr folgt mit € 50.000 - 70.000 (Lot 132). Wird Arbus häufig vorrangig als Photographin wahrgenommen, deren Interesse der am Rande der Gesellschaft Stehenden galt, d.h. den Transvestiten, Kleinwüchsigen, psychisch Kranken, Nudisten usw., so nahm sie doch ebenso auch die scheinbar „normale“ Existenz gut situierter und fest in die Gesellschaft integrierter Individuen in den Blick.

Beachtlich sind auch die 14 Photographien von August Sander aus dem Nachlass von Inge Jansen, einer früheren Assistentin des Photographen. Die Aufnahmen zeigen Ansichten von Köln, dem Siebengebirge und der Eifel und sind mit bis zu € 8.000 bewertet (Lots 41 – 54). Zu den weiteren Höhepunkten zählt das berühmte, 1929 aufgenommene Bäumchen von Albert Renger-Patzsch. Die Aufnahme fällt in Renger-Patzschs schöpferischste und aus photohistorischer Sicht wichtigste Schaffensphase. Die berühmte Aufnahme des jungen Kirschbaums im hellen Licht des Vorfrühlings, aufgenommen in der Gegend von Meißen in Sachsen, war eines der erklärten Lieblingsmotive des Photographen, von dem er sorgfältige Handabzüge auf Kodak-Royal-Papier anfertigte, um sie an gute Freunde und Auftraggeber zu verschenken. Um einen solch seltenen großformatigen Vintage-Abzug, von Renger-Patzsch selbst unter Originalpassepartout montiert und dort signiert, handelt es sich bei der hier vorliegenden Photographie (Lot 33, € 20.000 - 30.000).

Henri Cartier-Bressons stimmungsvolle Aufnahme Schwanensee, Bolschoi-Theater, Moskau trägt einen Schätzpreis von € 6.000 - 8.000 (Lot 99). Auf dieselbe Taxe kommt Edward Westons späterer, von Cole Weston abgezogener Gelatinesilberabzug Nude (Charis in doorway, Santa Monica) aus dem Jahr 1936 (Lot 76). Zu den bedeutenden früheren Werken in der Auktion gehören zwei piktorialistische Photographien Heinrich Kühns, darunter der Bromölumdruck Lotte und Hans Kühn aus der Zeit um 1908 (Lot 13, € 3.500 - 4.500).

Robert Mapplethorpe ist mit seiner graphisch anmutenden Hyancinth von 1987 vertreten (Lot 159, € 14.000), einer großformatigen Photogravüre auf Velin. Bemerkenswert, da noch nie in einer Auktion angeboten, ist auch eine Gruppe von vier Portraits der Photographin Joyce Baronio aus ihrer berühmten Serie "42nd street studio", die Frauen aus dem New Yorker Rotlichtmilieu zeigt. Joyce Baronio nahm die Portraitierten nicht in ihrem schummrigen Arbeitsumfeld auf, sondern in hellem Sonnenlicht in ihrem New Yorker Studio (Lot 154-157, jeweils € 2.000).

Thomas Höpker hat mit seinem Blick von Williamsburg, Brooklyn, auf Manhattan, 11. September 2001 eine der kontroversesten Aufnahmen des brennenden World Trade Centers geschaffen. Zur Versteigerung kommt hier ein großformatiger Pigment-Print des berühmten Motivs aus einer 7-er Auflage (Lot 185, € 15.000 - 20.000).

SAMMLUNG ELKE UND WERNER ZIMMER. REPORTAGE-PHOTOGRAPHIEN 1945 – 1990
Neben seinem regulären Photokatalog offeriert Lempertz Reportage-Photographien aus der Sammlung des Düsseldorfer Galeristenpaares Elke und Werner Zimmer, die zwischen 1945 und 1990 entstanden. Zu den hier vertretenen Photographen gehören Yevgeni Chaldej, Arno Fischer, Rolf Gillhausen, Peter Leibing, Will McBride, Robert Lebeck, Stefan Moses und Barbara Klemm. Den Anfang macht Chaldejs berühmte Aufnahme der Sowjetischen Fahne auf dem Berliner Reichstag, entstanden am 2. Mai 1945 (Lot 203, € 1.400), die jüngsten Aufnahmen stammen von Barbara Klemm und dokumentieren den Fall der Mauer und die Feierlichkeiten anlässlich des Tages der deutschen Vereinigung am 3. Oktober 1990 (Lots 241 – 249, jeweils € 1.000). Neben Portraits berühmter Persönlichkeiten finden sich unter den 47 Losen zahlreiche Bilder, die unsere Wahrnehmung der wichtigen historischen Ereignisse wie auch der Lebenssituation in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts in beiden Teilen Deutschlands maßgeblich geprägt haben und heute fest im kollektiven Bild-Gedächtnis verankert sind.

PHOTOGRAPHIEN IN DER AUKTION ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNST + PHOTOGRAPHIE
Die Offerte zeitgenössischer Photographien und Photoarbeiten, die in der Auktion "Zeitgenössische Kunst" am 28. November zum Aufruf kommen, ist in Qualität und Umfang beachtlich. Von Gerhard Richter kommt ein leicht unscharfes photographisches Selbstporträt aus den Jahren 1965 - 1971 (Lot 648, € 20.000 - 25.000). Mit € 16.000 - 18.000 bewertet ist Andreas Gurskys Schwimmbad/Teneriffa (Lot 663), eine seiner frühen Arbeiten.
Hiroshi Sugimoto ist mit einer seiner bekannten Kinoaufnahmen vertreten: Das Ribidoux Drive-in, Ribidoux aus dem Jahr 1993 liegt bei € 12.000 - 15.000. Bei € 10.000 - 15.000 liegt eine 2-teilige unbetitelte Photoarbeit, bestehend aus großformatigen Polaroids aus der Serie „Das Gold des Künstlers“ von Marina Abramovic / Ulay aus dem Jahr 1981 (Lot 894). Elger Essers nahezu abstrakte Arbeit Saint-Denis, Frankreich ist mit € 9.000 - 12.000 bewertet (Lot 981), Michael Weselys Langzeitbelichtung eines Stilleben (26.10.-11.11.2011) mit Granatäpfeln in changierenden Rot- und Rosétönen mit € 8.000 - 10.000. Von Candida Höfer stammen zwei Innenaufnahmen von Bibliotheken (Kloster Meherau, Bregenz I und Kunsthalle Basel III) mit Schätzpreisen von je € 6.000 - 8.000 (Lots 774/775).
