11th edition of photo­meetings luxembourg

In the context of Luxembourg’s Presi­dency of the Council of the European Union during the second half of 2015, the photomeetings will honour the world renowned, Luxembourg-born photographer Edward Steichen with a one man show at Galerie Clairefontaine, Espace 1, on Place Claire­fontaine.

At Espace 2, rue du St-Esprit, a curated exhibition with photographs by Edward Steichen, in dialogue with images by five contemporary photographers from Luxembourg, will be on display: François Besch, Andrés Lejona, Michel Medinger, Lé Sibenaler and Marc Wilwert.

The title of this eleventh edition is "Six Lives in Photography", inspired by Ed­ward Steichen‘s autobiography "A Life in Photography". The photographers were chosen according to their photographic journey so far, and their evolution in the Luxembourg art scene.

Given that Luxembourg holds the EU presidency, it is important to value the cultural heritage of the country and to promote its photographic tradition and creation. A group-exhibition at the Galerie Beim Engel will feature works by five photo-graphers of different generations: François Besch, Andrés Lejona, Michel Medinger, Lé Sibenaler, and Marc Wilwert on various floors of the gallery. François Besch will show some portraits out of his "Hipstamatical Faces" series (2011-2015) as well as a selection of recent landscape photographs realized in Bivange, the native village of Edward Steichen, and its neighbourhood. Andrés Lejona will present five photographs of his brand new series "Portraits et Personages", Lé Sibenaler will exhibit triptychs composed of portraits of the 1960’s/1970’s and current nature photography. On the lower floor Michel Medingers big Polaroids and his gigantic masterpiece called "Petite promenade de la vie qui passe" can be admired. Marc Wilwert will introduce his new series called "Ellipse", featuring "night shots" in a peculiar combination.

Nach mehreren Steichen-Ausstellungen (one-man shows in Luxemburg 1994 und 1995, verschiedenen Gruppenausstellungen sowie Messebeteiligungen mit Steichen-Fotografien, wie z.B. Art Basel, Art Cologne, Paris Photo...) präsentiert die Galerie Clairefontaine anlässlich der photomeetings luxembourg 2015 eine Ausstellung des gebürtigen Luxemburgers.

Die Accrochage in der Galerie Clairefontaine Espace 1 ist als chronologischer Rundgang durch die verschiedenen Schaffensperioden des Künstlers konzipiert: sowohl Luftaufnahmen aus dem Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg, als auch Camera Work-Ikonen, Landschaften, Modeaufnahmen, und Beispiele seiner einzigartigen Porträts sind zu sehen.

Von Steichen porträtiert zu werden war in dessen Prime Time, den 30iger und frühen 40iger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts ein Beweis dafür, dass man zu den "Celebrities" entweder im Showbusiness, in der Wirtschaft, der Wissenschaft oder der Politik gehörte. Steichen war ein Medienfotograf, der als einer der ersten das enorme Potential der Fotografie als Werbeträger erkannte und nutzte.
