The Photographs department presents its Modern Visions: Exceptional Photographs sale with works central to the Photo-Secession and modernist movements. Featuring pieces from Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Gertrude Käsebier, Gustave Le Gray and Paul Strand — to name but a few — the Evening and Day auctions showcase a wide range of masterworks indicative of the creative period between the two World Wars and revealing the global relevance of artists based on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. With rare pieces such as Steichen's In Memoriam, Alvin Langdon Coburn's Vortograph and three of Le Gray s large albumen prints, the auctions mark the commencement of a year-long series of online sales sold on behalf of the U.S. government.
