International festival of emerging photography PHOTOBOOKFEST 2018 announces the start of Photobook Dummy Contest
to support young photographers from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and CIS countries.

Constantly changing with the development of technology, materials, design and typography, the photobook is discovering new ways of transforming image into an impressive and dramatic event. The photobook has provided a real and affordable way for photographers to realize their ideas, especially in Russia and post-Soviet countries where, in the absence of the art market, they are put in a very challenging creative environment impeding the development of any healthy competition. The aim of the PHOTOBOOKFEST dummy contest is to support young photographers from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and CIS countries.
The first prize of the contest is publishing the winner's book.

The winner will be chosen by an international jury, while the shortlisted works will be displayed at the PHOTOBOOKFEST 2018 emerging photography festival.
The competition is open for photographers and creative collectives from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldavia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The deadline for applications is 15 April 2018.

What is photobook dummy? Hardcopies designed and produced by the author independently; printed in no more than 30 editions and have no ISBN number.

The 2017 contest winner was a project by a photographer Ikuru Kuwajima, «I, Oblomov». The book was selected by a competent international jury comprising such experts as Lesley A.Martin (USA), creative director at Aperture, Dieter Neubert (Germany), director of Fotobookfestival Kassel, Yevgeny Brezner, an art expert and curator of the PhotoVisa festival and others. Ikuru Kuwajima’s solo exhibition «I, Oblomov» will be held within the main exhibition programme of the festival from 20th of April to 17th of June 2018.

It is the second time the international festival of emerging photography PHOTOBOOKFEST takes places in Moscow gathering experts in photography and book design from all over the world. It will start on the 19th of April and continue until the 13th of May.

While the main venue for the event is the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography, this year the festival has expanded its presence to other educational and exhibit spaces in Moscow and other Russian cities, where a parallel programme of PHOTOBOOKFEST 2018 will take place.

The contest's strategic partners this year are the UP Print printing house, Europapier company and ABCdesign studio of graphic design.

The mission of PHOTOBOOKFEST 2018 is to look at photography in the context of modern media, to decide what it is capable of and how it can reach the audience, including the potential of the modern photobook to exist as an independent art form.
