The biennial Hungarian Month of Photography festival follows international trends with a structure that is as experimental as its programme. In 2018 the world’s leading contemporary art events lay the emphasis on collaborative praxes, especially those of curators, when they invite several art professionals to develop the theme of one festival or another. Each of the curators of Hungarian Month of Photography 2018 considers the present and future of photo-based art from their own viewpoint, while they also influence, and reflect on, each other’s work.

Curators Lili Boros, Máté Dobokay, Kati Simon, Anna Szigethy, Zsuzsanna Szegedy-Maszák and Zoltán Tóth Balázs take different paths and attitudes in their approach to photography, and this year’s festival is marked by both tension and passage between the generations and the media. What is shared is an adherence to the human scale, the study of micro-worlds, intimate moods, and the creation of casual atmospheres. The possibility to manipulate and virtually recreate the human body is a hot topic in this digital age, and is addressed in some of the festival’s exhibitions, as is the concept of alienation.

As this is an urban festival, the city and its image are centrally featured in the programme. Hungarian Month of Photography also follows the trends with regard to the venues chosen, when alongside the traditional exhibition spaces it involves and enlivens urban locales that have been less popular or have been used for other than exhibition purposes, inviting audiences to discover some of the hidden treasures of thecity.

Hngarian Month of Photography 2018 starts on 18 October, with the opening of the exhibition Weegee the Famous at The Hungarian House of Photograpers – Mai Manó House.

Along with the exhibitions, the Hungarian Month of Photography 2018 festival also offers professional events (discussions, guided tours, conference) to those who are interested in photography.
