Kathrin Ganser (*1977) works across media and creates immersive aesthetic spaces that are both material and immaterial. The photographic image plays a crucial role; both as source material (primarily that of found images from the web), and via specially created or constructed images. Ganser recontextualises this image-archive into her own pictorial spaces, in order to create new spatial images. Thus, her work goes beyond the conventional concept of room installation to that of an actual, walkable spatial image. Questions around authorship, such as that of each source material photograph, including the artistic status of such images are important themes in Ganser’s work.

Artistically, Ganser examines theoretical questions that become aesthetic in practice: the spaces she creates are fascinating and exploratory, destinations of true conceptual adventure travel. Here the viewer can tap into memory and projection, reality and fiction in a mesmerising and coalescing manner.

Kathrin Ganser studied at the Kunsthochschule Halle (with Prof. Una H. Moehrke) and at the UdK (Berlin University of the Arts), with among others, Prof. Katharina Sieverding. She completed her doctorate in 2014 at the Bauhaus University Weimar with a thesis in art and media philosophy. Ganser’s work is highly awarded, most recently with the Kempten Art Prize 2017 and a scholarship from the Bauhaus University Weimar. In 2018 she presented recent works in the solo exhibition "terrestre" at Kunsthalle Kempten. Kathrin Ganser lives and works in Berlin.

Kathrin Ganser (*1977) entwirft und kreiert künstlerische Räume anhand unterschiedlicher Materialien und Medien materiell wie immateriell. Dem fotografischen Bild, sowohl als meist im Netz gefundenes Bildmaterial wie auch eigens erstellten oder konstruierten Aufnahmen, kommt dabei besondere Bedeutung zu. Den Fundus all dessen speist Ganser in eigene Raumentwürfe ein, um darin neue Raumbilder entstehen zu lassen. So erweitert sie den konventionellen Begriff der Rauminstallation zu demjenigen eines tatsächlichen, begehbaren Raumbildes. Die Frage nach der Autorschaft der singulären Fotografie geht dabei in der Frage des künstlerischen Autorenstatus eines Gesamtbildes als der für sie eigentlichen, übergreifenden Urheberschaft auf.

Ganser forscht künstlerisch an theoretischen Fragen, die in der Praxis ästhetisch werden: Die von ihr gestalteten Räume sind höchst spannende Erkundungsorte, Ziele wahrer Abenteuerreisen des Sehens, die den Betrachter selbst Erinnerung und Projektion, Realität und Fiktion auf faszinierende Weise erschließen und miteinander verschmelzen lassen.

Kathrin Ganser studierte an der Kunsthochschule Halle (bei Prof. Una H. Moehrke) und an der Universität der Künste Berlin (u.a. Klasse Prof. Katharina Sieverding). Sie promovierte 2014 an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar mit einer Arbeit in Kunst und Medienphilosophie. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Preise für ihre Arbeit, zuletzt den Kunstpreis der Stadt Kempten 2017 sowie ein Stipendium der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. 2018 zeigte sie jüngste Arbeiten in der Einzelausstellung "terrestre" in der Kunsthalle Kempten. Kathrin Ganser lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
