This year's Spring auction presents an internationally and thematically wide-ranging, high carat spectrum of 19th and 20th century photography. The auction starts with a highlight from the early days of photography, a daguerreotype from 1845 showing the six founding fathers of the "Physikalischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin" shortly after the association was founded - a particular rarity. The fact that all the figures depicted are famous physicists and that the origins of the recording are precisely documented on an accompanying autograph, makes this unique photograph scientifically important. The photograph was taken by the physicist and mineralogist Gustav Karsten (1820-1900) who, thanks to the long exposure time, was able to immortalise himself with his colleagues in the picture (lot 1, € 6/8,000). Also worth mentioning is a selection of outstanding albumen prints by Wilhelm von Gloeden, Guglielmo Plüschow and Vincenzo Galdi. In exceptionally good condition, the portraits and open-air studies of young men, partly in antique-style nakedness, partly in contemporary costume, were taken before or around 1900 and are mostly from an Italian private collection (lots 6-17, € 1000-1,200).

For the fourth successive time, Lempertz is offering a selection of outstanding fine prints by Heinrich Kühn, the master of pictorial photography. The large-format gum dichromate print "In Bacino di San Marco, Venezia", taken in around 1898, is one of the highlights of the auction with its atmospheric conception, reminsiscent of 19th century veduta paintings (lot 18, € 20/30,000). The portrait of his photographic colleague Edward Steichen, presented here as a platinum print on Japan paper, is impressive evidence of Kühn's skill in dealing with extreme tonal values (lot 23, € 20/30,000).

A portfolio by Willy Zielke gathers a selection of twelve still lifes from the years 1929-35. Characteristic for Zielke's particular photographic style are the carefully arranged compositions of the photographs and the close-up perspective typical for New Objectivity photography. Elaborately designed by Klaus Wittkugel, only a few copies of the portfolio were made and has never before been offered at auction (lot 59, € 6/8,000). Also offered is a rare "brûlages" by Raoul Ubac (lot 75, € 8/10,000). This is a surrealistic alienation process developed by Ubac in which the previously exposed glass negative is exposed to great heat setting a process of deformation in motion. Ubac used this process for only a few years making the brûlage offered here a rarity.

Robert Mapplethorpe's "Snakeman" belongs to those portraits in which the photographer depicts his models with antique attributes. The unidentified young man wears a black satyr mask reminiscent of fetish objects, whilst the snake winding around his shoulders, a phallic symbol, shows him as a seducer as well as the seduced (lot 156, € 8/12,000). The colour photographs of Saul Leiter have so far been rarely offered in German-speaking auctions. The chromogenic print with the title "Snow" shows a view through a misty window onto a snowy street with dark, shadowy silhouettes of passers-by (lot 147, € 5/7,000). The shot "Antartica" is from Sebastião Salgado's famous "Genesis" series, depicting a mountain range stretching to the horizon and populated by an army of penguins (lot 182, € 8,000).

Die diesjährige Frühjahrsauktion bildet ein international und thematisch breit gefächertes, hochkarätiges Spektrum der Photographie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts ab. Zum Auftakt der Auktion wird ein Highlight aus der Frühzeit der Photographie aufgerufen: Eine Daguerreotypie aus dem Jahr 1845, die die sechs Gründungsväter der "Physikalischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin" kurz nach Entstehung der Vereinigung zeigt, stellt eine besondere Rarität dar. Die Tatsache, dass sämtliche der Dargestellten berühmte Physiker sind und die Aufnahmesituation auf beiliegendem Autographen genau dokumentiert ist, macht diese unikate Photographie zu einem Stück von wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Bedeutung. Urheber der Aufnahme war der Physiker und Mineraloge Gustav Karsten (1820 - 1900), der sich selbst – dank der langen Belichtungszeit – mit seinen Kollegen im Bild verewigen konnte (Lot 1, € 6/8.000). Erwähnenswert ist auch eine Auswahl hervorragender Albuminabzüge von Wilhelm von Gloeden, Guglielmo Plüschow und Vincenzo Galdi. Die in außergewöhnlich gutem Zustand vorliegenden Portraits und Freilichtstudien junger Männer - teils in antikisierender Nacktheit, teils in zeitgenössischer Tracht – sind vor bzw. um 1900 entstanden und stammen überwiegend aus italienischem Privatbesitz (Lot 6-17, € 1.000-1.200).

Bereits das vierte Mal in Folge bietet Lempertz eine Auswahl herausragender Edeldrucke von Heinrich Kühn an. Der um 1898 entstandene, großformatige Kombinationsgummidruck "In Bacino di San Marco, Venezia" mit seiner stimmungsvollen, an die Vedutenmalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts erinnernden Auffassung, zählt zu den Höhepunkten dieser Auktion (Lot 18, € 20/30.000). Das kunstvolle Zusammenspiel von belebter Wasseroberfläche, Booten, unbewegtem Himmel und der sich in am Horizont abzeichnenden Stadtsilhouette Venedigs, weist Kühn als Meister der piktorialistischen Kunstphotographie aus. Das Portrait seines Photographenkollegen Edward Steichen, hier vorliegend als Platindruck auf Japanpapier, belegt eindrucksvoll Kühns Können auf dem Gebiet der Bewältigung großer Tonkontraste. Gesicht und Hände des in nachdenklicher Pose versunkenen Freundes heben sich als helle Akzente vor dem Hintergrund des nur schwach beleuchteten, jedoch nuanciert wiedergegebenen Innenraums ab (Lot 23, € 20/30.000).

Ein Portfolio von Willy Zielke versammelt eine Auswahl von zwölf Stillleben aus den Jahren 1929-35. Kennzeichnend für den besonderen Aufnahmestil Zielkes sind die sorgsam arrangierten Kompositionen der Photographien und die für die Neusachliche Photographie charakteristische Nahsicht. Das von Klaus Wittkugel aufwändig gestaltete Portfolio, von dem nur wenige Exemplare angefertigt wurden, ist bislang noch nie in einer Auktion angeboten worden (Lot 59, € 6/8.000). Von Raoul Ubac kommt eine seiner seltenen "Brûlages" zum Aufruf (Lot 75, €8/10.000). Hierbei handelt es sich um ein von Ubac entwickeltes surrealistisches Verfremdungsverfahren, bei dem das zuvor belichtete Glasnegativ großer Hitze ausgesetzt und somit ein Deformationsprozess in Gang gesetzt wird. Das Verfahren wurde von Ubac nur wenige Jahre angewendet, was die hier angebotene Brûlage einer Portraitstudie zu einer Rarität macht.

Robert Mapplethorpes "Snakeman" gehört zu jenen Porträts, in denen der Photograph seine Modelle mit antikisierenden Attributen darstellt. Der hier gezeigte unbekannte junge Mann trägt eine schwarze Satyrmaske, die an Fetischobjekte erinnert. Die sich um seine Schultern windende Würgeschlange, ein phallisches Symbol, lässt ihn gleichermaßen als Verführer wie als Verführten erscheinen (Lot 156, € 8/12.000). Die Farbphotographien von Saul Leiter sind in deutschsprachigen Auktionen bislang nur selten angeboten worden. Der C-Print mit dem Titel "Snow" zeigt einen Blick durch ein beschlagenes Fenster auf eine verschneite Straße mit dunklen, schemenhaften Silhouetten von Passanten. Bedeutsam für die fast malerische Qualität der Komposition ist der Farbakzent, der von dem gelben LKW im Hintergrund gebildet wird (Lot 147, € 5/7.000). Aus der berühmten "Genesis"-Serie von Sebastião Salgado kommt die Aufnahme "Antarctica" zum Aufruf, die einen bis zum Horizont reichenden Gebirgsgrad zeigt, bevölkert von einer Heerschar von Pinguinen (Lot 182, € 8.000).
