Milan and Venice pay tribute to Roman Opałka with Dire il tempo (Telling time), an exhibition in two chapters curated by Chiara Bertola.

The Franco-Polish artist, who died in 2011, will be the focus of two complementary exhibitions conceived and produced by BUILDING and Fondazione Querini Stampalia, in Milan and Venice respectively.

Both exhibitions revolve around OPALKA 1965/1-∞, the project to which the artist dedicated much of his life. For the very first time, the first and last Détails are being presented together: the first from the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, Poland, is on its debut showing in Italy, while the last, unfinished canvas comes from a private collection and has never been exhibited before now.

Together with Roman Opałka's representations of time, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia will present a group of works by Mariateresa Sartori (Venice, 1961), an artist from a different generation who with Opalka had formed an intense relationship in the city.

The Venetian exhibition was made possible thanks to the generous collaboration of Anneliese Lenz and the support of the galleries Lévy Gorvy, New York, Michela Rizzo, Venice, Studio G7, Bologna, and Doppelgaenger, Bari.

On 6 and 7 May 2019 Didier Morin’s film “Le dernier Détail peint de Roman Opałka” will be presented to the public for the first time at Querini Stampalia Foundation. It depicts Opałka’s painting time, set to the rhythm of everyday life, in his atelier at Bois Mauclair, where everything turns sacred when the artist repeats out loud the numbers he is painting.  The artist was filmed and recorded over approximately forty sessions while he was working on what would be his last Détail.
