With new graphics and a new section of outdoor exhibitions, the Images' Festival takes on a new look this autumn! Each of the four sections of the 2008 show has its own individual colour: Blue for the outdoor exhibitions; yellow for the international competitions; pink for the cinema programme; grey for the monographic exhibitions. OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHS The 2008 show has a major new feature: the Festival takes the name "Vevey, city of images" literally by installing the work of fifteen or so international artists outdoors on various support media, sometimes of a monumental nature. The common theme in this section is illusions of scale. The exhibited photographs all have their own photographic staging which upsets the observer's usual graphic perception. The humour and ingenuity of the results combine to arouse the curiosity of passers-by. Vevey thus turns into a free open-air museum for three weeks' duration. INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Every two years the Images' Festival stages international competitions in photography and in cinema. In 2008 the Grand prix international de photographie de Vevey has attracted more than 620 professionals from all five continents. As already announced, this year Belgian photographer Geert Goiris was awarded the sum of CHF 30,000 to carry out his project at the South Pole. An avid traveller, Geert Goiris likes to draw the inspiration for his work from the wide open setting provided by certain special places. Taking part in several expeditions sponsored by the Belgian government in order to construct the first totally environmentally-friendly scientific base, named "Princess Elizabeth", the photographer reveals the magic of the Antarctic. In situ, he is captivated by the curious nature of the panorama formed by the human structures placed in this almost supernatural-looking environment. This is the birth of the Whiteout project, the award-winner this year at Vevey. The new pictures of the project have arrived, and they invite the observer to engage in a daydream that at once disconcerting and fascinating. The short films made by the winners of the cinema competition will also be shown to the public during the festival. CINEMA PROGRAMME Three cycles of films will accompany the photography exhibitions and will be shown throughout the duration of the event in the screening rooms of the Rex in Vevey. The first cycle will be dedicated to Yvan Dalain. Full details of the programme together with the timings will shortly be available online on our internet site. MONOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS In the framework of the Images'08 Festival the Jenisch Vevey Museum, the Swiss Camera Museum Vevey and the Historic Museum of Vevey will be staging exhibitions featuring important figures in the artistic community. BALTHASAR BURKHARD Jenisch Vevey Museum from 12 September 2008 to 11 January 2009 In the framework of the Images'08 Festival, internationally renowned Swiss photographer Balthasar Burkhard (born in 1944) will be appearing at the Jenisch Vevey Museum presenting an exceptional retrospective covering almost forty years of activity. EXHIBITION IN TRIBUTE TO YVAN DALAIN Swiss Camera Museum Vevey, from 11 September 2008 to 15 March 2009 The Swiss Camera Museum Vevey invites you to discover the work of Yvan Dalain, photographer, film maker and author from the canton of Vaud who died in Montreux in the autumn of 2007. PETER GARFIELD Historic Museum of Vevey, from 11 September to 30 September 2008 Also exposed in the outdoor section, a special exhibition with new works and a brand new video installation of the American artist Peter Garfield, well know for the his flying houses, will also be presented at the Historic Museum of Vevey.
