In his stunning photographs of reconstructed rooms and places, Thomas Demand (b. 1964, Munich), explores a compelling version of reality. The starting point for Demand's works are everyday images from diverse sources; documentary photos found in newspapers or on the internet, locations from television, historical material from books, glimpses of the sky or urbane landscapes. Using coloured paper and board, he builds meticulous copies of situations, lights them precisely and photographs them. Demand's places, always devoid of people, are reduced to pure, clean surface. Cool and undisturbed, they appear familiar yet also other worldly, combining reality and virtuality. Freed from their social, cultural or narrative context, Demand's images have a strong fictional quality. Like film stills, they suggest unknown drama, triggering stories in our imagination. From the narrative potential of his still images, Demand has in recent years begun to set his images in motion by producing films, two of which are included in this exhibition. They accompnay a substantial selection of his photographic works of recent years. In either format, Demand's work explores fiction and its fusion with life. One of the foremost artists of his generation in Germany, this is Demand's first major solo show in the UK. It is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue including texts by curator Susanne Gaensheimer, art critic Neville Wakefield, author Jeffrey Eugenides and artist Collier Schorr.
