The Stephen Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition of large-scale color photographs by German photographer Olaf Otto Becker. Broken Line will be the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery. As with his first exhibition, Becker continues to capture the grandeur and awe of some of the most rarely explored landscapes in the world. Armed with an 8 x 10 camera, Becker employs his training as a painter to full advantage in this new series of stoic landscapes. Utilizing classic compositional formats, the photographs in Broken Line embody a calm and serene quality, echoing the still waters of Greenland. Capturing a variety of scenery ranging from melting icebergs & rocky bay shores, to majestic mountaintops, Becker arranges these elements in the romanticist landscape manner creating windows onto these exquisite spaces. With 81 percent of its surface covered by ice, Greenland provides the backdrop for Becker’s inventive exploration of place. Containing some of the most rarely seen natural formations, and having recently experienced some of the warmest summers ever recorded, Greenland has undergone some of the most extreme ice melting and deterioration to date. Becker’s haunting landscapes then, become portraits of a place that in the very near future might not exist. Becker has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions in both Europe and the U.S. His book, Under the Nordic Light, was short-listed for the renowned 2006 Rencontres D’Arles Book Award. In 2007, he exhibited his Icelandic work at the Museum of Photography in Reykjavik, and in July of that year Hatje Cantz published “Broken Line”, the artist’s breathtaking landscapes of Greenland. He will be exhibiting work at the Nelson-Atkins Museums of Art's Human/Nature: Recent European Landscape Photgraphy exhibition in 2008.
