"I have returned to Calcutta six times since 2003 and "Red Square" is in part an attempt to unravel the complex emotions roused by this distant city, a sensation that appears somehow tied to my cultural identity. An exhibition in Calcutta three years ago of the initial photographs led to a close collaboration with Soumitra Das, a Bengali journalist, to work on a book project about the fulcrum of colonial power in India, the central square at the heart of Calcutta where, by historical quirk, British trade was first established back in 1686." - Christopher Taylor.
