The Stephen Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce Summer Reading, a group exhibition showcasing the book as art. Along with traditional art photography books, the exhibition includes limited edition books with photographs, artist books, and art pieces created using books and other paper materials. Summer Reading highlights works created in book form, or from actual books – and will emphasize the concept of craft in fine art, and the skill of the artist, as well as the publisher of fine art books. We all want to get lost in a good book – a mystery, a romance, or an adventure – that allows us to live vicariously through fictional characters and famous individuals. These works, and the process each artist employs will help us escape momentarily from our routines and into the detailed beauty and the innovative ideas they are founded on. Works exhibited range from Tom Baril’s Manhattan, published by 21st Editions with a short story by Ann Beattie and a portfolio of photogravures to Ching-Ching Cheng’s sculputure, 8 mm, created from found books, glue, resin, and film negatives. Martin Parr’s eponymous limited edition book published by Phaidon will also be on display, along with Charlene Matthews’ artist book, Through the Window, created using screen material, fabric, stitching, and sheep’s vellum for the cover. Summer Reading also features works by Bruce Davidson, William Eggleston, Larry Fink, James Fee, Gerald Förster, Luis González Palma, Josef Hoflehner, Graciela Iturbide, Simen Johan, David Levinthal, Meg Madison, Jack Pierson, John Patrick Salisbury, Bronia Sawyer, and Susan Sironi, among others.
