Over 40 exhibitions focusing on cinema, America and travel.
Russia's most important photography festival this year presents more than 40 all-star shows focusing on cinema, America and travel. The cinema projects include a media installation dedicated to Ingmar Bergman; photographs from the Wim Wenders series "Pictures From the Surface of the Earth" showing landscapes from different parts of the world; and a unique exhibition of photographs of criminals dating from the 1920s to the 1950s from the LAPD archives that are reminiscent of noir movie stills. The America theme is represented by a Lee Friedlander solo show, "America by Car"; Walter Rosenblum's shots of Jewish neighborhoods in New York; and William Klein, who fomented a revolution in fashion photography; and much more. For the "On the Road" theme there are Pieter Hugo's photos of Nigeria (or more accurately, of waste dumps for electronics); Martin Parr's impressions of the abandoned sandy beaches of New Brighton; and reflections of California in Gonzalo Lebrija's motorbike. The high note of the festival is undoubtedly struck by Miroslav Tichy's first Moscow solo show. Tichy is an outsider photographer from the Czech town of Kyjov, and shows half-naked city women in photographs taken on a camera made of discarded materials.
