Live sale on artnet Auctions from June 5 through 13, 2013

artnet Auctions is pleased to announce Classics for New Collectors, a special sale of important, classic photographs. This sale presents a wide variety of the iconic images from established masters of photography, and is geared toward buyers who seek the most collectable images in the history of photography. With over 70 works, Classics for New Collectors encompasses a wide variety of subject matters, and with a mixture of vintage and later prints, the sale appeals to collectors of works of all price points.

Included in the sale are influential artworks such as Alfred Stieglitz’s The Steerage (1907), Paul Strand’s Wall Street (1915), Andre Kertesz’s Chez Mondrian (1926), Walker Evans’s Main Street, Saratoga Springs, New York (1931), Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Rue Mouffetard (1954), and many more works by celebrated artists including Ansel Adams, August Sander, Ruth Bernhard, Harry Callahan, William Eggleston, George Hoyningen-Huene, Joel Meyerowitz, Irving Penn, Tina Modotti, Diane Arbus, Berenice Abbott, Eugene Atget, Weegee, and Edward Weston. Works in the sale range in value from US$2,000 to 50,000.

One highlight of the sale is Imogen Cunningham’s Magnolia Blossom I (1925), which was printed in the 1970s and is estimated at US$10,000 to 15,000. One of Cunningham’s most notable botanical photographs, this close-up study of a magnolia reflects the shift toward Realism among Modernist photographers of the time. Breaking away from the dominant Pictorialist style, Cunningham’s image is sharp and realistic, and serves as a study of form and design.

Also featured is Edward Weston’s iconic Pepper No. 30 (1930). Like Cunningham’s magnolia, Weston’s pepper is a study of form; the dramatic highlights and shadows emphasize the sensuous, almost human-like curves of the pepper. With a composition that resembles abstraction, Weston transforms an everyday object into something beautiful. Pepper No. 30 is estimated at US$12,000 to 15,000.

The sale includes an exceptional group of celebrated images by Horst P. Horst, all offered in rare large sizes. Horst, a long-time photographer for Vogue, is known for some of the most iconic fashion photographs of the 20th century, from the classic Mainbocher Corset (1939), estimated at US$12,000 to 18,000, to the provocative Around the Clock I (1987), estimated at US$12,000 to 15,000, the playful Dali Costumes (1939), estimated at US$6,000 to 8,000, and the surreal Lisa with Harp (1939), estimated at US$12,000 to 18,000.
