The launch of this year's Photoszene Festival coincides exactly with the 175th anniversary of photography on 19 August. Under the title WallPaper the Festival will provide a richly faceted overview of the medium and, during the main events week from 16 to 21 September – alongside specialist photography trade show photokina – will present its own programme of events.

During podium debates, lectures and interviews at the Festival's two centres, The PhotoBookMuseum (Cologne-Mülheim) and the Museum of Applied Arts, Cologne (MAKK) (city centre), Photoszene will investigate the subject of presentation forms for photography. While the – initially temporary – PhotoBookMuseum makes its voice clearly heard in favour of the photo book as THE appropriate way of presenting photography, Photoszene is inviting experts from the worlds of science and art production to provide historical and contemporary insights into the practice of putting photography on show.

A lot has happened since the new Photoszene team was launched: The Supporters Edition made a guest appearance on the historic premises of designer hotel The Qvest, co-operation partners have been found and the PhotoBookMuseum is taking shape. Combining all its forces, the team is now working hard to prepare for the late-summer Festival.

Professional’s Choice

For the festival in September, Photoszene has invited international photography experts to follow the exhibition trail in the city and make recommendations for visitors. We are delighted that Simone Klein (Sotheby’s Europe, Photography department, Director), Ute Noll (gallerist and chief picture editor at DU), Thomas Hoepker (Magnum photographer) and Karol Hordziej (Art Director Photomonth Krakau) have agreed to take part.

Participation is open to all those who have space for exhibitions and who wish to use it to show photography. Photoszene is looking forward to a broad spectrum of artistic positions at a wide variety of locations. The theme WallPaper, with the question of (re)presentation of photography, will be the reference point: be it individual works, whole exhibition concepts, a lecture or visitors' viewpoints – there are no limits to how the theme is realized, but it is not, however, mandatory.

Furthermore, all participants will have the unique opportunity to exhibit successively with Cologne's great art institutions, such as Museum Ludwig, the MAKK (Applied Arts) and the photographic collection Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur.

Festival-Program

The Festival is sure to attract plenty of notice, as not only photokina visitors will be drawn to all the exhibitions. A high-calibre supporting programme, a programme of tours by the young art enthusiasts at the jungekunstfreunde, and the editorially independent magazine L. Fritz, to be published for the first time to mark the 175th birthday of photography on 19.8, are the major advantages on offer for putting on a photography exhibition this autumn.

In addition to the photography experts from the Professional's Choice, photographers from the legendary agency Magnum Photos will hold a workshop during the Festival, and the next generation of photographers will be promoted via a portfolio review.

Building The PhotoBookMuseum! Supporters wanted!

Markus Schaden invited guests to the halls of the Carlswerk in Cologne-Mülheim for the first time on 12 April and presented his impressive concept of a globally unique museum of photo books. His aim, over more than 5,000 square metres, is to create a lively public place for promoting photo book culture. This year's main co-operation partner to Photoszene Köln thus formulates a strong hypothesis, which we will be putting up for discussion during our Festival week: The photo book is THE appropriate form for presenting photography.

The supporters among his team include photographers, art historians, curators, designers and business people. Photoszene Köln: Looking ahead

Cologne as a location is an important base for artistic and scientific dialogue on photography. The medium has many and varied areas of use.

Applying an art history focus, the university conducts research on the history and theory of photography; the art university pushes the boundaries of imaging and expands photography into intermedia processes; major galleries represent internationally renowned artists; important museum collections ensure the medium's longevity and preservation and showcase varied exhibitions; exhibition spaces on the independent scene put current trends on display; photokina fair of KölnMesse is bringing together international companies and producers, photo archives document the diverse areas of use; the German Photographic Society (DGPh) has been promoting photography at its branches for many decades.

With its new focus, Photoszene intends to keep this enormous potential visible beyond the biennial Festival. It will do so through the magazine L.Fritz, published twice annually, and through events and projects that will reflect the Festival internationally. The context of this reflection is an artistic one: the focal points of the examination are the photographic image and its inclusion in artistic, documentary or applied contexts.

Pünktlich zum 175. Geburtstag der Fotografie am 19. August startet auch das diesjährige Photoszene-Festival. Unter dem Titel "WallPaper" wird es einen facettenreichen Überblick über das Medium bieten und in der Hauptveranstaltungswoche vom 16. bis 21. September parallel zur Fotofachmesse photokina ein eigenes Veranstaltungsprogramm präsentieren.

In Podiumsdiskussionen, Vorträgen und Gesprächen in den zwei Festivalzentren The PhotoBookMuseum (Köln-Mülheim) und dem Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (Innenstadt) wird die Photoszene der Frage nach den Präsentationsformen für Fotografie nachgehen. Während das – zunächst temporäre - PhotoBookMuseum lautstark die These vertritt, dass das Fotobuch die adäquate Präsentationsweise für Fotografie ist, lädt die Photoszene Experten aus Wissenschaft und Kunstproduktion ein, historische und zeitgenössische Einblicke in die Ausstellungspraxis von Fotografie zu gewähren.

Seit dem Start des neuen Photoszene-Teams ist viel passiert: Die Supporters-Edition hat in den historischen Räumen des Designhotels The Qvest gastiert, Kooperationspartner wurden gewonnen und das PhotoBookMuseum nimmt Form an. Unter Hochspannung und mit vereinten Kräften wird nun auf das Festival im Spätsommer hingearbeitet.

Professional’s Choice

Zum Festival im September hat die Photoszene internationale Fotografieexperten eingeladen, den Ausstellungsparcours in der Stadt zu besuchen und eine Empfehlung für die Besucher auszusprechen. Teilnahme

Eingeladen zur Teilnahme sind alle Interessenten, die einen Ausstellungsraum haben und dort Fotografie zeigen möchten. Die Anmeldefrist zum Photoszene-Festival endet am 13. Mai.

Die Photoszene freut sich auf eine große Bandbreite künstlerischer Positionen an den unterschiedlichsten Orten. Das Thema "WallPaper" mit der Frage nach der (Re-)Präsentation von Fotografie dient als Anhaltspunkt: Ob einzelne Arbeiten, ganze Ausstellungskonzepte, ein Vortrag oder die Sichtweisen der Besucher – der Umsetzung des Themas sind keine Grenzen gesetzt, es ist jedoch nicht verpflichtend.

Hier bietet sich für alle Teilnehmer die einmalige Gelegenheit, in einer Reihe mit den großen Kölner Kulturinstitutionen wie dem Museum Ludwig, dem MAKK und der Photographischen Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur auszustellen.

Rahmenprogramm

Die Ausstellungen des Photoszene-Festivals werden nicht nur die photokina Besucher anziehen. Ein hochkarätiges Rahmenprogramm, ein Führungsprogramm der jungekunstfreunde und das neue, redaktionell unabhängige Magazin "L.Fritz", das erstmalig zum 175. Geburtstag der Fotografie am 19. August erscheinen wird, garantieren allen Beteiligten große Aufmerksamkeit.

Desweiteren werden Fotografen der legendären Agentur Magnum Photos Workshops anbieten und ein Portfolio-Review wird den fotografischen Nachwuchs fördern.

Building The PhotoBookMuseum! Unterstützer gesucht!

Am 12. April lud Markus Schaden zum ersten Mal in die Hallen des Carlswerks in Köln-Mülheim ein und präsentierte sein beeindruckendes Konzept eines weltweit einzigartigen Museums für Fotobücher. Sein Ziel ist es, auf über 5.000 qm einen lebendigen öffentlichen Ort zur Förderung von Fotobuchkultur zu schaffen.
