ORINOCO - FRONTERA DE AGUA

ORINOCO - FRONTERA DE AGUA

3 May – 9 Jun 2024
Orinoco - Frontera de agua - (Water Border) is a visual and literary essay by Juanita Escobar featuring various stories and voices from those who have forged a life in this stateless area near the Orinoco River border between Colombia and Venezuela. At the heart of this story are the women: indigenous women (from the Sikuani, Amorúa, Piaroa, Curripaco tribes), Venezuelan, Colombian, and Llaneras (women of the plains). Here, the border becomes a living body bearing the names of the people and… more

An Expression of Absence

An Expression of Absence

Selections from the Arab Documentary Photography Program

28 Oct – 18 Dec 2022
The Bronx Documentary Center and Magnum Foundation present An Expression of Absence, an exhibit taking inspiration from poet Mahmoud Darwish and critic John Berger that explores the ways photography conjures absence to represent time, memory, disappearance, loss, and erasure. In a context where the legacies of colonialism and political instability have imbued notions of home and belonging with impermanence and nostalgia, how can what's within the frame point to the hidden and missing?

CONGO IN CONVERSATION

9 Sep – 16 Oct 2022
The collaborative reportage Congo in Conversation was launched in April 2020 by Finbarr O’Reilly, laureate of the 11th edition of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award dedicated to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic prevented him from traveling to the DRC to work on his reportage, O’Reilly and the Award team reframed their approach to produce a reportage in close collaboration with Congolese journalists and photographers. Flint is a place

Flint is a place

26 Apr – 27 May 2018
Flint is a place is a project about Flint, Michigan, both as it’s perceived and experienced. What happens in Flint happens in many other urban American cities. But in Flint, it happens all at once. It’s what makes Flint so important in the national conversation.

The project is using a variety of media to document a specific moment within this American city in an intimate, character-driven way. Mixing video, photo, audio, archival materials, graphic design, virtual reality, data visu… more

Spanish Harlem: El Barrio in the ‘80s

Spanish Harlem: El Barrio in the ‘80s

11 Nov 2017 – 14 Jan 2018
Shot in the mid-to-late 80s, Joseph Rodriguez’s superb photographs of East Harlem bring us into the core of the neighborhood, capturing a spirit of a people that survives despite the ravages of poverty, and more recently, the threat of gentrification and displacement. In a now-distant landscape littered with abandoned buildings, ominous alleyways, and the plague of addiction, the residents of Spanish Harlem persevered with flamboyant style and gritty self-reliance.
