For the past 40 years, the Istituto Europeo di Design has been operating in the field of research and education in the disciplines of fashion, design, visual arts and communications. Today, the IED is a constantly growing international network with branches in Italy (Milan, Rome, Torino, Florence, Venice, and Cagliari), Spain (Madrid and Barcelona), and Brazil (São Paulo). The IED’s main goal is to become a global reference point of quality in education and the dissemination of design and culture on an international level. IED Madrid was founded in 1994 as a private academic institution dedicated to Design in all its facets: Fashion, Graphic Design, Motion Graphics and 3D Animation, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Advertising, and Marketing.

Today it has two branches in the city’s center, which is home to 1,400 students: the Modernist Building at Calle Larra No. 14 holds the IED Masters, and Altamira Palace at Calle Flor Alta No. 8, from the 18th Century, houses the triennial courses. Both branches are open to the city – the library is public and, each year, an intense cultural program for the dissemination of design is planned, which is open to the interested public. Thanks to the IED’s continuous relationship with the business world, all courses rely on the support of 200 companies and institutions, among which we would like to mention: the Madrid City Council, the Autonomous Region of Madrid, the State Society for Design Development (DDI), Apple, Vitra, Iguzzini, Caimi, Loewe, Fiat, Missoni, Canal+, *S,C,P,F, Missoni, Philips and Visa. The IED supports students’ professional continuity through the Department of Professional Orientation, which manages internships with companies, scholarships and collaborations with design and communications studios.

In addition to being an international training school, IED Madrid is a cultural institution for the dissemination of design and its related disciplines, such as architecture, art, dance, film, and music. The school organizes exhibits, conferences and activities with a vision of the future via innovation and experimentation.

The IED Madrid Photography Department prides itself on innovation and a quality faculty, as well as focusing on projects as the fundamental core of learning and understanding the creative experience. We believe that learning photography cannot be understood without the sincere commitment of the best professors/artists, who transmit their personal experience and share their creative encounters with other emerging and established artists. Similarly, we are convinced that this generous attitude can only be productive if students are able to translate this learning into the development and production of a personal project. IED Madrid develops its academic offerings and photography courses based on this demanding, ambitious concept, thinking not of amateurs, but rather students’ inspiration to become photographers, professionals and artists. The IED’s Department of Photography has recently signed an exchange program with Seoul’s prestigious Chung-Ang University and collaborates with institutions such as PhotoIreland (Dublin), Photographic Social Vision (Barcelona) and European Photography Magazine (Berlin).

The Department is directed by Moritz Neumüller and coordinated by Marta Orozco. Project tutors are Nicolás Combarro, Ricardo Cases and Joan Villaplana. Our students normally come from all over the world and thus most of our courses are run in English and Spanish, with simultaneous translation in the classroom, by Eduardo Cervera. Please have a look at the list of our docents.

We regularly organize exhibitions (such as Private Faces Public, 2013) and talks in collaboration with other local institutions, such as Ivorypress, the Estampa Fair, PhotoEspaña, the Reina Sofia Museum, and selected international partner institutions.

Students’ works are exhibited and published by the school and – more importantly – in international magazines (such as FOAM, European Photography), galleries, fairs and festivals. Please have a look at our Success Stories for some examples.

Our most recent collaboration is a joint workshop program with EMAHO Magazine in Asia, featuring artists such as Cristina de Middel, Ricardo Cases, Dinu Li, Andreas Müller-Pohle, Nicolas Combarro, Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber, among others.
