The works from Gian Paul Lozza’s «Somnium» series play directly with the viewer’s cultural reservoir – the intersubjective storehouse of images and stories that has developed in popular culture. «This is a journey into the depths of the human psyche», says Gian Paul Lozza. «It is dark and melancholy there. The viewer is abandoned to himself. The film of internal images takes him captive and leads him into unknown recesses of his consciousness».

Lozza also calls his landscape photographs «Metascapes», providing a further allusion to a cultur- al-historical reference system that includes the landscape painting of the 19th century. Lozza photographs exclusively at night in order to focus in on the structural visual objects. The colours therefore generate a pallid impression that leads to a painterly haziness. Associations are generated here to the imposing, almost abstract evening pictures of the Romantic William Turner, whose engagement with landscape has perma- nently changed how we represent the experience of nature. Gian Paul Lozza’s enigmatic visual worlds also involve changes in perception: his unpopulated landscapes certainly flirt with the concept of beauty but they insistently demand an engagement both with immediately existing realities and with photographic and cultural realities. Die Werke aus Gian Paul Lozzas «Somnium»-Serie spielen gezielt mit dem kulturellen Reservoir der Betrachter – mit dem Bilder- und Geschichtenspeicher, der sich in der popkulturellen Welt herausgebildet hat. «Die Reise geht in die Tiefe der menschlichen Psyche», sagt Gian Paul Lozza. «Dort ist es dunkel und melancholisch. Der Betrachter ist sich selbst ausgeliefert. Der Film der inneren Bilder nimmt ihn gefangen und bewegt ihn in unbekannte Ecken seines Bewusstseins.»

Lozza nennt seine Landschaftsaufnahmen denn auch «Metascapes» – und liefert damit einen zusätzlichen Hinweis auf ein kulturgeschichtliches Bezugssystem, etwa auf die Landschaftsmalerei des 19. Jahrhun- derts. Er fotografiert ausschliesslich in der Nacht, um die strukturellen Bildgegenstände zu fokussieren. Darum bleibt die Wirkung der Farben blass und es stellt sich eine malerische Unschärfe ein. Hier entstehen Assoziationen zu den grandiosen, nahezu abstrakten Abendbildern des Romantikers William Turner, dessen Auseinandersetzung mit Landschaft unsere Vorstellung von Naturerlebnis nachhaltig verändert hat. Um Wahrnehmungsveränderungen geht es auch in den Bildwelten von Lozza: die menschenleeren Landschaften kokettieren zwar mit dem Schönheitsbegrif, sie fordern aber vehement eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Wirklichkeiten – den unmittelbar existierenden wie den fotografischen und kulturellen Realitäten.
