A New Approach To Autobiography
Self-portraiture is a tricky and charged subject matter as everyone who has practiced it knows. In this intensive workshop the Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus will discuss with the participants its various aspects and in the assignment go beyond the ordinary self-depiction. Working alone alternates with working together as a group. Sharing time and images is an important part of the experience. Emphasis will also be put on the selection and editing process which is a crucial part of the work of a photographer.
Prior tasks to the participants: Produce a two-page chronological ‘time-line’ that spans your life. Note personal and public events that have had a meaningful, memorable effect on your life - landmark events, visual experiences, your perception of things around. What has formed the YOU of the present, what has been significant to the formation of your identity? Prepare a small portfolio (analogue or digital), a selection of 10-20 photographs of yours that you will present to the group as an introduction to your work and your thinking.

The workshop will be held in English.


Elina Brotherus (*1972) works in photography and video. Her early work dealt with subjective experiences, the presence and absence of love. In her series The New Painting (2000–2005), Elina Brotherus probed the relation of photography to art history and found inspiration in the iconography of classical painting. In Model Studies (2002–2008) and Artist and her Model (2005–2011), she continued to explore the human figure within a landscape, and the gaze of an artist on his/her model. In her recent work 12 ans après (2011–2012) and Annonciation (2009–2013) she returns to the autobiographical approach of her youth.
Elina Brotherus has an MA degree in Photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto University) and a MSc in Chemistry from the University of Helsinki. She has been awarded the Prix Niépce of Gens d'Image, France (2005), the Finnish State Prize for Photography (2008), the Scandinavian Carnegie Award's Young Artist’s Scolarship (2004), the Prix Mosaïque of Centre National de l'Audiovisuel, Luxembourg (2001) and the Fotofinlandia Award (2000). Elina Brotherus has published four monographs, including, most recently, Artist and her Model in 2012. She has exhibited since 1997 in institutions such as MAXXI, Rome; ARTER, Istanbul; The National Art Center, Tokyo; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Hasselblad Center, Gothemburg; Saatchi Gallery, London; Biennale of Sydney; Istanbul Biennial, to name a few.
Elina Brotherus lives and works in Finland and France.

Neue Betrachtungsweisen der Autobiografie – Selbstdarstellung ist ein heikles und komplexes Gebiet wie jeder weiß, der es praktiziert hat. Im intensiven Workshop diskutieren die Teilnehmer zusammen mit der finnischen Fotografin Elina Brotherus die einzelnen Aspekte der Selbstdarstellung und versuchen im praktischen Teil über deren Gewöhnlichkeit hinaus zu gehen. Intensives Arbeiten für sich wechselt sich mit Gruppenaufgaben ab. Das gemeinsame Teilen von Zeit und Bildern wird zu einem wichtigen Teil der Workshop-Erfahrung.
Zum Workshop ist folgende Aufgabenstellung vorzubereiten: Die Workshopteilnehmer werden gebeten eine zweiseitige chronologische ‚Zeitleiste‘ zu erarbeiten, die Ihr Leben umspannt. Hierbei sollen Ereignisse notiert werden, die eine bedeutende und unvergessliche Wirkung auf das eigene Leben gehabt haben – Schlüsselereignisse, visuelle Erlebnisse, sowie die persönliche Wahrnehmung darum herum. Was hat das heutige ICH beeinflusst, was war wesentlich für die Identitätsbildung verantwortlich? Die Teilnehmer werden zudem gebeten, Mappen mit ihren Arbeiten (10–20 Bilder) mitzubringen, die der Gruppe als Einführung in die eigene Arbeit und Vorgehensweise präsentiert werden sollen.

Der Workshop wird in Englischer Sprache gehalten.


Elina Brotherus (*1972) ist Foto- und Videokünstlerin. In ihren frühen Arbeiten befasste sie sich mit subjektiven und doch universellen Erfahrungen, wie der Präsenz und dem Fehlen von Liebe. In ihrer Serie The New Painting (2000–2005) untersuchte Brotherus das Verhältnis der Fotografie zur Kunstgeschichte und fand Inspiration in der Ikonographie der klassischen Malerei.

In Model Studies (2002–2008) und Artist and her Model (2005–2011) erkundete sie die menschliche Figur in der Landschaft und den Blick des Künstlers auf sein Modell. In ihren jüngsten Arbeiten 12 ans après (2011–2012) und Annonciation (2009–2013) kehrt sie zu dem autobiographischen Ansatz ihrer Jugend zurück.
Elina Brotherus schloss ihr Studium der Fotografie an der University of Art and Design Helsinki (jetzt Aalto University) mit einem Master of Arts ab. Von der University of Helsinki erhielt sie zuvor ein Master of Science in Chemie.
Sie wurde mit dem Prix Niépce of Gens d'Image, Frankreich (2005), dem Finnish State Prize for Photography (2008), dem Scandinavian Carnegie Award's Young Artist’s Scolarship (2004), dem Prix Mosaïque of Centre National de l'Audiovisuel, Luxemburg (2001) und dem Fotofinlandia Award (2000) ausgezeichnet.

Elina Brotherus lebt und arbeitet in Finnland und Frankreich.
