Long a source of creativity and experimentation for artists and intellectuals in the twentieth century, Mexico has had a profound influence on several generations of contemporary artists. Made in Mexico investigates different views of Mexico, its history, and the way it is perceived by the rest of the world, as it contrasts the work of the current generation of Mexican artists with that of artists from around the globe. The exhibition presents the work of the Mexican artists Eduardo Abaroa, Claudia Fernández, Teresa Margolles, Gabriel Orozco, Damián Ortega, Pedro Reyes, Sebastián Romo, and Daniela Rossell along with long-time resident artists Francis Alÿs, Thomas Glassford, Santiago Sierra, and Melanie Smith. Made in Mexico also includes the work of non-resident artists—Andrea Fraser, Erik Göngrich, Terence Gower, Andreas Gursky, Mona Hatoum, Sharon Lockhart, Yasumasa Morimura, and Anton Vidokle—whose work does not necessarily come out of a local experience yet draws upon a distinctly Mexican vernacular, whether iconographic, architectural, or environmental. The first exhibition to fully examine Mexico's influence through the work of a diverse group of international artists, Made in Mexico explores the country as a concept as well as a geographical site, taking an in-depth look at one of today's most influential contemporary artistic centers. Made in Mexico is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalog featuring contributions by exhibition curator Gilbert Vicario and Pamela Echeverriˇa, Curator at the Museo de Art Carrillo Gil in Mexico City.
