Sascha Weidner´s solo exhibition at Conrads focus on on various new series and new works in different media created during his stay in the Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, in the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing and in Berlin. The Joint between these formally diverse works is the aspect of absence. The exhibition title "the presence of absence" formulates related to photography a contradiction in terms, which will be resolved in the exhibition with the means of photography.

Among other works 20 photographs of the series "Aokigahara" are part of Sascha Weidner´s solo show "the presence of absence".

About "Aokigahara": High up, above the peaks of the holiest mountain sits enthroned the goddess of light, watching over Mount Fuji and all volcanoes. But where the good spirits rule, the demons of the underworld are never far away. At the foot of Mount Fuji, the holiest mountain for the Japanese lays the forest Aokigahara. The forest is so dense and obscure that one can easily get lost in it and it is said that the subsoil has a specific consistency, which makes even compasses fail. Since the 1960s, people who want to commit suicide come to the forest to end their lives. In case they change their minds, and the desire to live wins over their death wish, they trail Ariadne’s threads behind them, so that they can find their way out again. Sascha Weidner has followed these threads that permeate the whole forest, with his camera. He was warned not to enter the haunted forest where ghosts strike terror in people’s hearts. But the dark fascination of the forest was stronger than any cautionary tale. In a very subtle way, Weidner’s photographs are able to give us an insight into this place where real human suffering and motifs from the world of myths are entangled in one another. Hereby, the images are not a direct or an offensive depiction of death and decomposition. They merely suggest or intimately indicate, they carefully sift through the eerie territory. The exhibition »Aokigahara« is also a photographic account of the infamous Suicide Forest or Sea of Trees as is called among locals. But first and foremost it is a photographic contemplation of light and darkness, of life and death and the threads of destiny that everyone trails behind oneself. Sascha Weidner (*1976 in Osnabrück) studied photography, film and painting as well as communication design at the Braunschweig University of Art. In 2004 he was a Meisterschüler of Dörte Eißfeldt and graduated with distinction. With the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), he worked in Los Angeles between 2004 and 2006. In 2013, Sascha Weidner was artist-in-residency of the Goethe Institut at Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, Japan and in 2014, at the Three Shadows Photography Centre in Beijing. He has been awarded numerous distinctions, including the Förderpreis des Kunstpreises Berlin 2010 by the Academy of the Arts Berlin, Villa Vigoni (Italy), Stiftungspreis für Fotokunst 2011 of the Alison & Peter Klein Stiftung, the NBank photography advancement award, and the first prize in the Polaroid International Photography Award. Weidner has been named as the inaugural winner of the Entrepreneur 4.0 award in 2013.

In addition to appearing in many publications and collections, his works have been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide at venues including the C/O Berlin, the Foam in Amsterdam, the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, the FO.KU.S in Innsbruck, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, the International Photography Festival Knokke-Heist, Zephyr / Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim, the Monash Gallery of Art in Melbourne, the Museum for Photography in Braunschweig and the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney.

Sascha Weidner zeigt in seiner Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Conrads Fotografien, Lightboxes und Objekte aus verschiedenen Werkserien, die 2013/2014 während seiner Aufenthalte in der Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, im Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Peking und in Berlin entstanden sind. Das Gemeinsame der formal unterschiedlichen Arbeiten ist der Aspekt von Abwesenheit. Der Ausstellungstitel "the presence of absence" formuliert im Zusammenhang mit Fotografie einen Widerspruch in sich, der in der Ausstellung mit den Mitteln der Fotografie aufgelöst wird.

Der erste Teil der Ausstellung "the presence of absence" im Eingangsbereich der Galerie umfasst 20 Fotografien aus der Serie Aokigahara. Die Werkgruppe über den Sterbewald Aokigahara entstand während Sascha Weidners Aufenthalt als Stipendiat des Goethe-Instituts in der Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto 2013. Wo hoch oben die Götter des Lichts thronen, da sind auch die finsteren Geister der Unterwelt nicht fern. Am Fuß des Fuji, dieses heiligen Bergs der Japaner, liegt der Wald Aokigahara. Er ist so dicht und finster, dass man sich schnell darin verlaufen kann, außerdem soll sein Untergrund eine spezifische Beschaffenheit haben, die dafür sorgt, dass der Kompass dort seinen Dienst versagt. Seit den 1960er Jahren kommen Lebensmüde in diesen Wald, um dort ihr Leben zu beenden. Hinter sich her ziehen sie Ariadnefäden, damit sie für den Fall, dass der Lebenswille doch noch den Todeswunsch überwiegt, wieder aus dem Wald herausfinden. Diesen Fäden, die den ganzen Wald durchziehen, ist der Fotograf Sascha Weidner mit seiner Kamera nachgegangen. Man hat ihn gewarnt, der Wald sei verflucht und Geister trieben dort ihr Unwesen. Aber die dunkle Faszination des Waldes überwog. Auf subtile Weise erzählen Weidners Bilder von diesem Ort, wo reales menschliches Leid und Motive aus der Welt des Mythos so seltsam ineinander verwoben sind. Die Bilder verzichten auf die offensive Abbildung von Tod und Verwesung, sie deuten nur an, tasten sich vorsichtig durch das gespenstische Gelände. Die Ausstellung »Aokigahara« ist so einerseits ein Bericht aus dem berüchtigten Selbstmordwald, in erster Linie aber eine fotografische Meditation über Licht und Finsternis, Leben und Tod, und die Fäden des Schicksals, die jeder von uns hinter sich herzieht. Sascha Weidner (*1976 in Osnabrück) studierte Fotografie, Film und Malerei sowie Kommunikationsdesign an der Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Braunschweig. 2004 war er Meisterschüler bei Prof. Dörte Eißfeldt. Mit der Unterstützung des DAAD arbeitete er 2004 und 2006 in Los Angeles. Sascha Weidner erhielt zudem das Stipendium für die Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, Japan durch das Goethe-Institut im Jahre 2013, sowie in 2014 das Stipendium für das Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Peking.

Sein Werk wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Förderpreis des Kunstpreises Berlin 2010 der Akademie der Künste, dem Stipendium der Villa Vigoni, dem Stiftungspreis für Fotokunst 2011 der Alison & Peter Klein Stiftung, dem Förderpreis Fotografie der NBank und dem 1. Preis des internationalen Polaroidwettbewerbs. Er ist der erste Preisträger des 2013 ausgelobten Entrepreneur 4.0 Award. In seiner Arbeit geht es ihm um „die Suche nach dem Refugium, in dem Utopie die Realität inszeniert und Realität die Utopie“ (SW). 2012 wurde Sascha Weidner in die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie berufen. Neben zahlreichen Publikationen wurden seine Arbeiten in zahlreichen Ausstellungen weltweit präsentiert, so auch u.a. im C/O Berlin, dem Foam in Amsterdam, der OpenEye Gallery in Liverpool, im FO.KU.S in Innsbruck, den Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, dem Ludwig Museum in Budapest, dem Photofestival in Knokke-Heist, dem Museum für Photographie in Braunschweig und dem Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney.
