LE BAL is pleased to present the first major exhibition in France of dirk braeckman, a foremost figure in contemporary Flemish photography.

[…] Dirk Braeckman, who trained in both painting and photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, brings his images to life in the darkroom where, sometimes years after the original shot, he reworks first the negative itself then the print, lightening or darkening certain areas, often re-photographing his own prints or making "images of images" taken from magazines or websites. This accumulation of negatives and prints becomes the raw material for his work. A source to be endlessly mined. Print after print, this exhausting of the image by the image ultimately pushes Dirk Braeckman's oeuvre into the realm of performance more than a reproduction of reality.[…] Diane Dufour

LE BAL est heureux de présenter la première exposition d’envergure en France consacrée au travail de Dirk Braeckman, figure majeure de la scène contemporaine flamande.

Formé à l’Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Gand à la peinture autant qu’à la photographie, Dirk Braeckman donne vie à ses images dans la chambre noire. Là, parfois des années après la prise de vue, il retravaille la matière même du négatif puis du tirage, éclaircissant ou obscurcissant certaines parties de l’image, rephotographiant souvent ses propres tirages ou ses « images d’images » prises dans les magazines ou sur internet. Les négatifs et les tirages ainsi accumulés deviennent la matière première de son oeuvre. Une mine dans laquelle il peut tailler à l’infini. Tirage après tirage, cet épuisement de l’image par l’image finit par faire basculer le travail de Dirk Braeckman du côté du geste performé plus que de l’enregistrement du réel. Son exigence picturale rend tout probable, même le vrai.[…] Diane Dufour
