THE ART, ANTIQUES AND DESIGN FAIR OF TODAY
Casper Faassen (1975, Leidschendam, NL) is a painter and photographer who lives and works in Leiden, The Netherlands. In this city he developped his love for art. Inspired by the realistic, classical paintings of painters such as Dou, Rembrandt and Steen, Faassen decided (after business school) to focus solely on art.
Portraits, landscapes, nudes, cityscapes and flowers, all traditional 17th century Dutch subjects, are translated in Faassen’s unique figurative language.
Beauty is a central theme. The silent, eternal and beautiful are set against a background of apparent decay, which is most visible in the handling of materials.
His photographs are built up like paintings with different imaginary and physical layers, giving the viewer a feeling of distance and at the same time a voyeuristic presence.
Faassens work has been included in both solo and group shows at various art instutions and museums, and has been shown at multiple international art fairs. In 2003 he was the runner-up in the Dutch Artist of the Year Election and in 2007 he was awarded Talent of the Year in that same competition. In addition to many private and corporate collections in Europe, Faassen’s work has been included in public collections, including as the Frans Hals Museum, the Royal Library in The Hague and Museum de Lakenhal.
