"Photo-Poetics: An Anthology"

The exhibition "Photo- Poetics: An Anthology" documents a development in art of the past decade. It is conceived as an anthology, as a vehicle to individually showcase each artist’s influential contemporary practice.

The ten artists featured here contemplate the nature, traditions, and magic of photography at a moment characterized by its rapid digital transformation. They rematerialize the medium through meticulous printing, using film and other disappearing photo technologies, and by creating photo-sculptures, installations, and artist’s books.

While they are invested in exploring the processes, supports, and techniques of photography, they are also deeply interested in how photographic images circulate. Theirs is a sort of »photo poetics,« an art that self-consciously investigates the laws of photography and the nature of photographic representation, reproduction, and the photographic object.

Drawing on the legacy of conceptualism, these artists pursue a largely studiobased approach to still life photography that centers on the creation of images as objects, as well as on the representation of imagebearing printed matter— books, magazines, record covers, and snapshots. They are drawn to appropriate these items for diverse reasons, ranging from the cultural and historical significance of the photographs to the personal associations they evoke. The works in the exhibition, rich with detail, reward close and prolonged regard; they ask for a mode of looking that is closer to reading than the cursory scanning fostered by the clicking and swiping functionalities of smartphones and social media.

Die Ausstellung "Photo-Poetics: Eine Anthologie" dokumentiert bestimmte Entwicklungen in der zeitgenössischen Kunst des letzten Jahrzehnts. Aufgebaut wie eine Sammlung, gibt sie zu jeder einzelnen Position eine Einführung in das Werk und stellt die jeweilige künstlerische Praxis vor.

In einer Zeit, die vor allem durch rapiden digitalen Wandel geprägt ist, untersuchen die zehn teilnehmenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler das Wesen, die Tradition und die Magie der Fotografie. Dabei verleihen sie dem Medium wieder neue materielle Präsenz – durch aufwändige Druckverfahren, den Einsatz von Film und anderen nicht mehr verwendeten Fototechniken oder durch Produktion von Fotoskulpturen, Installationen und Künstlerbüchern.

Über die intensive Erforschung der Prozesse, Materialien und Methoden der Fotografie hinaus interessieren sie sich besonders dafür, wie fotografische Bilder reproduziert werden und zirkulieren. Man kann ihren Ansatz als eine Art "poetisierte Fotografie" verstehen: eine Kunst, die reflexiv die Gesetze der Fotografie sowie das Wesen der fotografischen Repräsentation und Reproduktion und des fotografischen Objekts hinterfragt.

Aufbauend auf dem Denken der Konzeptkunst realisieren die Künstlerinnen und Künstler der Ausstellung ihre Arbeiten vorwiegend im Studio. Die fotografischen Stillleben die dabei entstehen, kreisen um die Objekthaftigkeit von Bildern und ihre Repräsentation als Druckerzeugnis: auf Buchcovern, Zeitschriften, Plattencovern oder Schnappschüssen. Diese werden aus den unterschiedlichsten Gründen verwendet – sei es wegen kultureller und historischer Relevanz der fotografischen Bilder oder wegen persönlicher Assoziationen, die sie hervorrufen. Die komplexen Arbeiten in der Ausstellung erfordern eingehende, längere Betrachtung. Sie verlangen nach einer Sehweise, die eher dem Lesen gleicht, als dem oberflächlichen Abscannen, Weiterklicken und Wegwischen von Bildern, das wir uns durch den täglichen Umgang mit Smartphones und Social Media angewöhnt haben.
