Visions of the future, horror scenarios or purely idyllic scenes? The photographic works by the New York artist Lori Nix show a world without people – a world reclaimed and ruled by Nature.

Lori Nix (born 1969) is a storyteller par excellence. In her photographs she whisks the viewer off to fictive places such as a museum, library, launderette or shopping mall, which bear testimony to the past existence of human beings on this earth and the achievements of their civilisations. With her photographs, whose motifs are based on small-scale dioramas that she constructs herself, the artist threatens to topple our anthropocentric view of the world. Human control centres and public places are reduced to absurdity. Nature alone remains, the last bastion of life.

The show is sponsored by the Kunststiftung NRW and the Landschaftsverband Rheinland and is the first museum exhibition of Lori Nix’s work in Europe.

Zukunftsvisionen, Horrorszenarien oder pure Idylle? Die fotografischen Arbeiten der New Yorker Künstlerin Lori Nix zeigen eine Welt ohne den Menschen – eine Welt, in die die beherrschende Macht der Natur zurückkehrt…

Lori Nix (geb. 1969) ist eine Geschichtenerzählerin par excellence. In ihren Fotografien entführt sie den Betrachter an fiktive Orte wie Museum, Bibliothek, Waschsalon oder Shopping Mall, die auf die einstige Existenz und auf zivilisatorische Errungenschaften des Menschen auf der Erde verweisen. Mit ihren Fotografien, deren Motive auf selbst konstruierten, kleinformatigen Dioramen basieren, erschüttert sie unsere anthropozentrische Weltsicht in ihren Grundfesten. Kontrollzentren des Menschen und öffentliche Orte werden in ihrer Funktion ad absurdum geführt. Nur die Natur bleibt eine letzte Bastion der Lebendigkeit.

Die Ausstellung wird gefördert von der Kunststiftung NRW und dem Landschaftsverband Rheinland und ist die erste Museumspräsentation von Lori Nix in Europa.
