Bloomsbury Auctions is delighted to announce two photography sales, 19th and 20th Century Photographs from a Private Collection and Photo Opportunities on March 5th and 6th. The first is a single owner collection encompassing many masters of the medium from photography’s pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot through to Man Ray, Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz. The following day Photo Opportunities will offer first-time buyers a chance to start off a collection of renowned photographers’ works at affordable prices. The sale will include Photobooks and a no reserve section.
Aside from works such as Talbot’s The Fruit Sellers, 1845 (lot 1, est. £10,000 - 15,000) - or Julia Margaret Cameron’s Mrs Duckworth, 1867 (lot 6, est. £10,000 - 15,000), the early part of 19th and 20th Century Photographs from a Private Collection will feature Charles Nègre positives and negatives bought at the legendary Jammes Part III sale in 2002, as well as works by Gustave Le Gray. Pictorialism is showcased through a selection of images from Camera Work including a large format photogravure of Alfred Steiglitz’s The Steerage 1907 (lot 42, est. £6,000 - 8,000), while other photographs from the same period include Cavern in an Iceberg, ca.1911 by Herbert Ponting (est. lot 47, £1500 - 2,000), an orotone of Edward Curtis’ Maid of Dreams, 1909 (est. lot 43, £2,000 - 3,000), and a rare album of some of the first X-Ray photographs ever taken in 1896 by Toussaint Barthélémy and Paul Oudin (lot 52, est. £1,500 - 2,000).
Surrealism is highlighted in the sale with shots of mannequins exhibited in the influential International Surrealism Exhibition of 1938, designed by Tanguy, Miro, Duchamp, and Dali, and taken by Man Ray, the most valuable of all being a vintage close up of Man Ray’s own mannequin (lot 90, est. £6,000 - 8,000). Portraits of André Breton and Marcel Duchamp by Man Ray and Henri Cartier-Bresson originating from Breton’s own estate also feature in the sale, as well as Man Ray’s Installation with Self-portrait, ca.1950 (lot 110, est. £3,000 - 5,000).
The collection also incorporates a wide selection of nudes including Imogen Cunningham’s classic Triangles, 1928 (lot 100, est. £3,000 - 5,000), a vintage František Drtikol from 1938 (lot 99, est. £2,000 - 3,000), a variety of distortions, 1933 by André Kertész (lot 75 and 76, est. £2,000 - 3,000; £3,000 - 5,000), later prints of Edward Weston’s iconic nude studies (lot 101 - 103) and more modern images by Pierre Molinier (lot 127, est. £700 - 900) and Ellen von Unwerth (lot 189 -191).
