Bloomsbury Auctions is delighted to announce two photography sales, 19th and 20th Century Photographs from a Private Collection and Photo Opportunities on March 5th and 6th. The first is a single owner collection encompassing many masters of the medium from photography’s pioneer William Henry Fox Talbot through to Man Ray, Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz. The following day Photo Opportunities will offer first-time buyers a chance to start off a collection of renowned photographers’ works at affordable prices. The sale will include Photobooks and a no reserve section.

Aside from works such as Talbot’s The Fruit Sellers, 1845 (lot 1, est. £10,000 - 15,000) - or Julia Margaret Cameron’s Mrs Duckworth, 1867 (lot 6, est. £10,000 - 15,000), the early part of 19th and 20th Century Photographs from a Private Collection will feature Charles Nègre positives and negatives bought at the legendary Jammes Part III sale in 2002, as well as works by Gustave Le Gray. Pictorialism is showcased through a selection of images from Camera Work including a large format photogravure of Alfred Steiglitz’s The Steerage 1907 (lot 42, est. £6,000 - 8,000), while other photographs from the same period include Cavern in an Iceberg, ca.1911 by Herbert Ponting (est. lot 47, £1500 - 2,000), an orotone of Edward Curtis’ Maid of Dreams, 1909 (est. lot 43, £2,000 - 3,000), and a rare album of some of the first X-Ray photographs ever taken in 1896 by Toussaint Barthélémy and Paul Oudin (lot 52, est. £1,500 - 2,000).
