Dorotheum's Photography Auction on June 22, offers a trip through Austria's history of photography. Well-timed for the 150th anniversary of Vienna's Ringstrasse, Dorotheum is pleased to offer two vintage photos picturing the construction along the famous ring boulevard of The imperial Opera House ("Bau des neuen k. k. Hofopernhauses im Jahre 1865", Lot 3, estimated price € 2,000-2,500). To fully appreciate the ring boulevard project's significance to modern day Vienna, one merely has throw a glance at the auction's photographs from the Imperial and Royal State Printing Office (k. k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei). They were snapped in the 1850s and convey a vivid impression of the older, fortified Vienna with its city gates and bastions still intact (Lots 1, 2, € 800-1,000, and Lot 4, € 600-800).

Turning to the artsier side of historic Austrian photography, Robert Ritter von Stockert's still life fruit composition photo from the turn of the 19th. century represents the early, experimenting days of colour photography. The beautiful three-colour prints were developed by renowned imperial photographer J. Löwy (Lot 34, € 1,000-1,200).

Moving on to the era of monochrome photography, it is impossible to ignore the photographic works of Rudolf Koppitz, and not least his dramatic depiction of nuns - "Nonnen" - gathered in solemn prayer before a large crucifix. Dorotheum is putting the impressive photograph (Lot 55) under the hammer with a price estimate of € 7,000-9,000.

When dwelling with the history of Austrian photography, the prominent female protagonists of the elusive art form are impossible to ignore. They are prominently represented at Dorotheum's auction by Trude Fleischmann (Lot 101, € 500-700), Olga von Wlassics from photo-salon Manassé (among others Lot 65, € 500-700) and Dora Kallmus, known also by her artist name, D'Ora (Lot 66, € 400-500).

The works of Franz Hubmann convey historic testimony of a different, but no less significant kind. A long list of distinguished figures of contemporary history were immortalized by the popular portrait photographer's camera over the years; his photos of Oskar Werner, H. C. Artmann, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Pablo Picasso are among the photo auction's top picks (Lot 130, € 1,800-2,200, Lots 131 and 132, € 1,600-2,000, and Lot 133, € 1,000-1,300).

Three of the key figures in contemporary Austrian photography that it's quite impossible to ignore are Valie Export, Günter Brus and Christian Skrein. Significant works by the three artists – already modern classics in their own right – are also offered up for sale at the June 22 photo auction. Valie Export's ”zyklus der zivilisation – zur mythologie der zivilsatorischen prozesse”, the iconic picture of a garderbelt tattooed onto a woman's thigh (Lot 145) is offered with a price estimate of € 2,500-3,500. Günter Brus is represented by the imposing work "Selbstbemalung", Self-painting, from 1964 (Lot 146, € 2,000-3,000). Legendary are also Skrein's photographic works from the 1960s – of The Beatles in the snow for example, or that of a naked Miss Austria and the photographer semi-submerged in a pool filled with polystyrene beads (Lots 150 and 151, € 1,800-2,500 and € 3,000-4,000, respectively).

The brisk walk down history lane ends with two female photographers: Brigitte Kowanz (Lot 206 and 207, € 3,000-3,800) and Eva Schlegel (Lot 225, € 700-900).

The national top shelf niche of any art form should, of course, always be viewed, examined and valued within the context of works by renowned international peers. There will be plenty of opportunity to do so at Dorotheum's photo graphy auction. Among the internationally acclaimed photographers also represented is Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, an early pioneer within the field of photography. His two snapshots (Lots 8 and 9) from the Middle East date back to the 1840s and will be put on sale with price estimates of € 15,000-20,000 a piece. An important representative of 20th. century photographic art at the auction is Alexander Rodtschenko and his portrait album with photos of art historian and family friend Tatjana Maljutina. The album was given to Maljutina in 1936 as a present and is estimated at € 28,000-38,000 (Lot 76).

Einen guten Überblick über die österreichische Fotografie-Geschichte bietet die kommende Fotografie Auktion im Dorotheum. Passend zum Ringstraßen-Jubiläum zeigen zwei Vintages den "Bau des neuen k. k. Hofopernhauses im Jahre 1865" (Lot 3, Schätzwert € 2.000 – 2.500). Die Fotografien der k. k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei aus den 1850er Jahren geben eine Vorstellung vom "alten", noch "befestigten" Wien mit seinen Toren und Basteien (Lot 1, 2, € 800 – 1.000 & 4, € 600 – 800).

In die frühesten Anfänge der farbigen Fotografien führt uns Robert von Stockerts Früchtestillleben, dieses im Dreifarbenlichtdruck von J. Löwy gefertigt, ist um 1900 entstanden, es wird zwischen 1.000 und 1.200 Euro geschätzt (Lot 34).

Weiter in der Chronologie, zurück in Schwarz-Weiß, landet man bei bei den herausragenden Fotoarbeiten Rudolf Koppitz‘ und etwa seiner Aufnahme von "Nonnen", welche andächtig vor dramatisch bewölktem Himmel zu einem Kruzifix beten (Lot 55, € 7.000 – 9.000).

Geht man nun in der Geschichte der österreichischen Fotografie weiter, so darf man auch die fotografierenden Damen nicht auslassen, Trude Fleischmann (Lot 101, € 500 – 700), Olga von Wlassics für den Foto-Salon Manassé (u.a. Lot 65, € 500 – 700) und Dora Kallmus, D’Ora genannt, (Lot 66, € 400 – 500) sind in der Auktion vertreten.

Zeitzeugnisse der besonderen Art stammen von Franz Hubmann, dem bedeutende Persönlichkeiten vor der Linse standen; zum Beispiel die Fotografien Oskar Werners, H. C. Artmanns, Friedensreich Hundertwassers oder Pablo Picassos (Lot 130, € 1.800 – 2.200, 131 & 132, € 1.600 – 2.000 & Lot 133, € 1.000 – 1.300).

Spricht man über Österreichs Fotografie-Geschichte, so sollen und können Valie Export, Günter Brus und Christian Skrein nicht ausgelassen werden. Zeitgenössische Arbeiten, die längst zu den Klassikern zählen, werden am 22. Juni im Dorotheum angeboten: Valie Exports "zyklus der zivilisation – zur mythologie der zivilisatorischen prozesse", das bereits ikonische Motiv des tätowierten Strumpfbandgürtels, mit einem Schätzwert von 2.500 bis 3.500 Euro (Lot 145) und Günter Brus‘ "Selbstbemalung" aus 1964 geschätzt auf 2.000 – 3.000 Euro (Lot 146). Legendär sind auch die Arbeiten aus den 60er Jahren Skreins, die Beatles im Schnee oder die damalige Miss Austria mit dem Fotografen nackt im Styropor-Schwimmbad (Lot 150, € 1.800 – 2.500 & Lot 151, € 3.000 - 4.000)

Zwei Damen beenden diesen geschichtlichen Aufriss, Brigitte Kowanz (Lot 206 & 207, € 3.000 – 3.800) und Eva Schlegel (Lot 225, € 700 – 900). Den Rahmen, die Basis und den Kontext für österreichische Arbeiten dieser Qualität geben Fotografien internationaler Künstler und Künstlerinnen, auch sie finden sich in der Auktion. Als Pionier vertreten ist Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey mit seinen Aufnahmen des Mittleren Ostens aus den 1840er Jahren (Lot 8 & 9, € 15.000 – 20.000) und als bedeutender Vertreter des 20. Jahrhunderts Alexander Rodtschenko mit einem Album von Fotos Tatjana Maljutinas, 1936, geschätzt auf 28.000 bis 38.000 Euro (Lot 76).
