"Contemplation" and "Garden of Memory"

Roaming the forests of Japan, the United States of America and Europe over the last twelve years, Takeshi Shikama also trained his lens on sparser landscapes or urban spaces where nature coexists with stone. His gaze seeks the same balance between shadow and light, forges the same relationship between subject and frame and elaborates his 'visual haikus' with the same grace he instills in his sylvan compositions.

Between 2011 and 2013, Takeshi Shikama developed his vision outside the forest, producing numerous images in Europe, including two major series in Spain (Galicia) and Scotland (Isle of Skye).

The series on Galicia posesses a strength and generosity reminiscent of the treatment the photographer reserved for the island of Hokkaido. The density of the vegetation in this coastal region and the diversity of natural sites : wooded valleys, wild fields, virgin beaches, rocky shores, evoke the artist's native Japan, and both inspired and staggered his eye.

During an artist's residence on the Isle of Skye, in Scotland, Takeshi Shikama became interested in the stone circles and the standing stones : "Ancient Stones". To capture the details of these rocks which rise up amid wind-beaten plains, like forests of granite or craggy fingers reaching skyward, and the omnipresent stormy clouds, the photographer deployed his full technical expertise. Shooting conditions were difficult and, to produce prints he exhibited at the end of his stay, he had to use sunlight to develop his first negatives.

While preserving a continuity with his first opus "Silent Respiration of Forests" and developing on his "Evanescence : Landscape" series, Takeshi Shikama's new photographs constitute an altenate body of work which he calls "Contemplation" and which includes images he took in France (Fontainebleau, Normandy), the Netherlands and Italy.

Prints from the series "Garden of Memory : Animals and Plants" which the artist created between 2008 and 2014 are also presented for the first time. Conceived as a contemporary Noah's Ark, this series of portraits of stuffed animals in New York's Natural History Museum and greenhouse plants from around the world, is both a visual testament and a bittersweet assesment that future generations' memories of our earthly flora and fauna will perhaps resume itself to those specimens conserved in museums.

A large selection of handmade prints on traditional Gampi paper will be presented alongside several oversize limited edition platinum prints produced with Amanasalto (Tokyo, Japan).

Parcourant les forêts au Japon, aux Etats-Unis, et en Europe depuis douze ans, l'objectif de Takeshi Shikama s'est aussi attardé sur des paysages épurés ou des espaces urbains où la nature cohabite avec la pierre. Son regard cherche le même équilibre entre ombre et lumière, tisse les mêmes rapports entre sujet et cadre et construit ses 'haikus visuels' avec la même grâce dont il imprègne ses compositions sylvestres. Entre 2011 et 2013, Takeshi Shikama a pu amplifier sa vision des espaces hors des forêts et a réalisé de nombreuses photographies en Europe, dont deux séries majeures en Espagne (Galicia) et en Ecosse (Isle of Skye).

La série sur la Galice est d'une puissance et d'une générosité qui rappel le traitement que le photographe a réservé à l'île d'Hokkaido. La densité de cette nature et la diversité des lieux : vallées emboisées, champs sauvages, plages vierges, rivages rocheux, évoquent le Japon natal de l'artiste, et ont à la fois inspiré et bouleversé son œil.

En résidence d'artiste sur l'Ile de Skye, en Ecosse, Takeshi Shikama s'intéresse aux cercles de pierres : "Ancient Stones". Pour saisir les détails de ces menhirs qui se dressent au milieu de plaines fouettées par les vents, tels des forêts de granite ou doigts tendus vers le ciel, et les nuages orageux omniprésents, le photographe déploie tout son savoir faire technique. Les conditions de prises de vues sont difficiles et, pour produire les tirages qu'il expose à la fin du séjour, il doit se résoudre à utiliser la lumière du soleil pour développer ses premiers négatifs. Tout en s'inscrivant dans la continuité de son premier opus "Silent Respiration of Forests" et de sa série "Evanescence : Landscape", les paysages récents de Takeshi Shikama forment un ensemble nouveau, qu'il nomme "Contemplation" et qui regroupe ses images réalisées en France (Fontainebleau, Normandie), aux Pays Bas ou en Italie (Lacs Como et Maggiore).

Egalement présentée en avant-première, les premiers tirages de la série "Garden of Memory : Animals and Plants" que l'artiste a réalisé entre 2008 et 2014. Pensée comme une arche de Noé contemporaine, cette série de portraits d'animaux taxidermisés mis en scène, et d'espèces végétales sous serre, est à la fois un testament visuel et un constat doux-amer que la mémoire des générations futures de notre faune et flore planétaire sera sans doute celle des spécimens conservés dans les musées, tel le Natural History Museum, à New York.

Une large sélection de tirages réalisés à la main sur papier gampi par l'artiste sera présentée aux côtés de tirages grand formats en édition limité, réalisés par Amanasalto (Tokyo, Japon).
