Mazaccio & Drowilal: Wild Style
July 17 –August 30, 2015
The Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography is pleased to present Wild Style by Mazaccio & Drowilal – the winners of the third BMW Art & Culture Residency at the musée Nicéphore Niepce in Chalon-sur-Saône in 2013. During the residency program the artistic duet of Elize Mazac and Robert Drowilal produced two series - Wild Style and The Dog’s Best Friend that were exhibited for the first time during the oldest and most influential photographic festival Rencontres d'Arles in 2014 and as a special project at Paris Photo Fair later the same year.
The figures and the objects collected in Wild Style evoque kitch prints, 1990s soppy or flashy, often found on cheap t-shirts, childish iron-on transfers, Automotive body paint, personalized mugs or household items, street or garden decore...”Wild Style” appears such as a catalog of commodified forms of animal life by image, to the point that the separation between the real and its representation becomes imperceptible.
“Wild Style” is an anthropologic and iconographic, and above all photographic study of animals and the contemporary cultural representations. We explored how the representation of animals and the proliferation of the former in various mediums speaks about our relationship to consumer objects, artefacts and surfaces in general, as well as our relationship to the wild. This project is also an opportunity to explore new ways of showing our images, by attempting to draw traditional photography hanging toward a broader intertextual format, akin to an installation, which attaches great importance to the relationship established between the images and the methods of presenting them. ” (Mazaccio & Drowilal)
