VOCES (Voices): Latin American Photography 1980 - 2015, will open at the Michael Hoppen Gallery October 12th, 2015. The exhibition includes some of the most influential and recognised Latin American photographers as well as emerging artists who use the photographic medium as a form of individual expression. The gallery will exhibit works by artists from Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Brazil. The dialogue that emerges revolves around important themes of memory and identity within a socio-political context.
The art historian Wendy Watriss said that there is no such thing as “a Latin American identity,” nor is there a conceptual paradigm for the photographic art produced by Latin American artists.
What is clear from the selection of works sourced from across the continent is the extraordinary diversity of expression that is shown across disciplines. The myriad of subjects, textures and styles shown by these artists confirm their rightful place amongst the world’s most eloquent visual artists.
Guiding Light, the Michael Hoppen Gallery imprint, will produce a fully illustrated limited edition catalogue to accompany the exhibition. All the works included, many of them unique, will be for sale.
