The exhibition "Beyond Transisi" introduces influential photographic artists working in Indonesia today. Nine photographers born between 1960 and 1990 present key bodies of work documenting past and present circumstances of their country. They have all witnessed defining moments of transition within Indonesia: the booming expansion of Jakarta and Indonesia as a whole, political authoritarianism and democratic reformation, the digital revolution and the devastating consequences of natural disasters. However, Beyond Transisi is not just about journalistically recording the locality of their subjects, but expressing opinions that are globally relevant. Using the documentary tradition to surreal picture languages, each photographer has a unique approach to their subject. Their visual stories provide insight into topics such as youth, urban life, colonialism and man’s relationship to nature. The exhibition consists of portraiture, landscapes and street photography that are projected, mixed with video, shown as framed prints or part of book projects.

The exhibition is curated by Celina Lunsford, Artistic Director Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. "Beyond Transisi" is part of the artistic and cultural programme of Indonesia – Guest of Honour Frankfurt Book Fair 2015 and a cooperation with Antara Gallery, Jakarta.

Die Ausstellung Beyond Transisi stellt neun einflussreiche Fotokünstler vor, die heute in Indonesien arbeiten. Die zwischen 1960 und 1990 geborenen Fotografen präsentieren Schlüsselwerke, die vergangene und aktuelle Umstände ihres Landes dokumentieren. Sie alle haben prägende Momente der Transformation miterlebt: den Wachstumsboom Jakartas und ganz Indonesiens, das autoritäre Regierungssystem und seine demokratische Reformation, die digitale Revolution sowie die verheerenden Folgen von Naturkatastrophen. Jedoch geht es bei der Ausstellung nicht nur um die journalistische Dokumentation von ortsspezifischen Themen, sondern auch um den Ausdruck von Ansichten, die global relevant sind. Von der dokumentarischen Tradition bis hin zu surrealen Bildsprachen hat jeder Fotograf eine ganz eigene Herangehensweise an sein Sujet. Ihre visuellen Geschichten geben Einblick in Themen wie Jugend, urbanes Leben, Kolonialismus und die Beziehung von Mensch und Umwelt. Die Ausstellung besteht aus Porträtfotografie, Landschaften und Street Photography, die projiziert, mit Video vermischt, als gerahmte Prints, oder als Teil eines Buchprojektes gezeigt werden.

Die Ausstellung wird kuratiert von Celina Lunsford, Künstlerische Leiterin Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. "Beyond Transisi" ist Teil des Kunst- und Kulturprogramms von Indonesien – Ehrengast der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2015 und entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Antara Gallery, Jakarta.

Zur Ausstellung wird ein Katalog im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt erhältlich sein.
