Dépaysé explores the intimate connection between the Canadian artist and his work. The exhibition at Fotografie Forum Frankfurt features fifty black and white photographs and an oversized hand-made artist book. This body of work was developed on the margins of the artist’s many photographic projects over a forty-year career.

For Clément, photography has always been closely related to the book, particularly with the idea that an image refers to other images. On the one hand, it signifies that an image is a leaky container – smoke, fog, streams and rivers, reflections, and streets running across the image. On the other, Clément constantly questions the power of the photographic image to capture reality.

The title of exhibition is a French term that describes the condition of being “out of place”, feeling “strange” or “lost”. As a visual journey into the heart of urban solitude and its periphery, Serge Clément’s work irresistibly draws the viewer into an intimate relationship with the image. It is not important to know whether the place captured in the image is Montreal, Lyon, Tokyo or New York; rather the viewer should lose himself between several places. Clément is a master of the play of mirrors and of deceptive transparencies, of subtle filtering meant to disorient the viewer and to make him move between real and imaginary space. This space is made up of intimacy, secrets, silence and solitude. Clément thus confronts us with a surreal strangeness.

Serge Clément (*1950, born in Valleyfield, Canada) has been a photographer since the beginning of the 70s. His works have been exhibited worldwide in several solo exhibitions and are part of numerous private and public collections.

The exhibition was curated by Catherine Bédard and Celina Lunsford. It is a cooperation with Canadian Cultural Centre Paris and Embassy of Canada in Berlin. Dépaysé has also toured to Diffusion: Cardiff International Festival of Photography.

The publication "Dépaysé" published by Kehrer Verlag (35 Euro) consists of 138 images and 192 pages entirely designed by Serge Clément and Bruno Ricca. A special edition, which includes an original photograph signed by the artist, will also be available during the exhibition (250 Euro).

Dépaysé erkundet die enge Verbindung zwischen dem kanadischen Künstler und seinem Werk. Die Ausstellung im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt präsentiert fünfzig Schwarzweiß-Fotografien und ein überdimensionales Künstlerbuch. Diese Werke entwickelte Clément am Rande seiner über vierzig Jahre lang währenden Karriere als Fotograf.

Für Clément war die Fotografie schon immer eng verbunden mit dem Buch. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der Idee, dass sich in einem Buch einzelne Bilder aufeinander beziehen. Einerseits wird hiermit angedeutet, dass ein Bild wie ein undichter Behälter ist – mit Rauch, Nebel, Bächen und Flüssen, Reflexionen und Straßen, die durch das Bild laufen. Andererseits hinterfragt Serge Clément immer wieder die Möglichkeiten der Fotografie, die Realität einzufangen.

Der Titel der Ausstellung "Dépaysé" bedeutet wörtlich übersetzt aus dem französischen "fremd", "verloren" oder "fehl am Platz". Wie eine Reise ins Zentrum der urbanen Einsamkeit und seiner Randgebiete, ziehen Serge Cléments Arbeiten den Betrachter in eine intime Beziehung mit dem Bild. Der Ort der Aufnahme – ob Montreal, Lyon, Tokio oder New York – ist nicht von Bedeutung, der Betrachter soll sich vielmehr zwischen verschiedenen Plätzen verlieren. Clément ist ein Meister des Spiels mit Spiegeln und täuschenden Transparenzen, von subtilen Filtern, die dazu gedacht sind, den Betrachter zu irritieren und sich zwischen realem und imaginiertem Raum zu bewegen. Dieser Raum ist gefüllt von Intimität, Geheimnissen, Erinnerungen und Entdeckung. So konfrontiert uns Clément mit einer surrealen Fremdheit.

Serge Clément (*1950 in Valleyfield, Kanada) ist seit den frühen 1970er-Jahren Fotograf. Seine Arbeiten wurden bereits weltweit in mehreren Einzelausstellungen gezeigt und sind in zahlreichen öffentlichen wie privaten Sammlungen vertreten.

Die Ausstellung wurde kuratiert von Catherine Bédard und Celina Lunsford. Sie ist eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Canadian Cultural Centre Paris und der Botschaft von Kanada in Berlin. Dépaysé wurde ebenfalls bei Diffusion: Cardiff International Festival of Photography gezeigt.

Zur Ausstellung ist für 35 Euro die Publikation erhältlich. "Dépaysé" ist im Kehrer Verlag erschienen und enthält 192 Seiten mit 138 Abbildungen, die komplett von Serge Clément und Bruno Ricca gestaltet wurden. Für 250 Euro ist außerdem eine Vorzugsausgabe mit signiertem Print erhältlich.
