For the first time Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, and the Kunstmuseum Bonn simultaneously show two group exhibitions with the shared title "With Different Eyes. The Portrait in Contemporary Photography". These exhibitions both deal with a topic that never gets out of date and that offers a diversity of reference points to us. Not only in the history of painting, but especially in the history of photography, the portrait has always been one of the most important and constantly re-innovated pictorial contents.

The exhibitions present numerous artistic concepts that shed light on the genre from many different angles. The shows discuss aspects of individuality and identity, social and cultural contexts and social relations. Single photographs, photo sequences, room-filling installations and cinematic works show people in different living environments, examine their presence in the photographic picture and discuss the meaning of the portrait in regard to individualization, characterization, culture and abstraction.

Traditional forms of the picture and innovative approaches together illustrate the diversity of the topic and make visible the change that photography has been subject to over the last centuries, whether in respect of analogue and digital technologies or a broader artistic acceptance. It is with great freedom that the artists presented in the show make use of the means of media available to them and thus create their own cosmos. Being on display next to each other, the individual pictures and the serial portrait, which can be reproduced and distorted so easily, are able to unfold their full potential.

The two institutions in Bonn and Cologne put different emphases on the exhibitions’ topic.

Kunstmuseum Bonn focuses on aspects of contemporary artistic picture concepts in the field of portrait photography in Germany and thus ties in with its collection’s focus on German art after 1945. The show will include artists whose photographic approaches reach from documentary to mise-en-scène, from restatements of iconographic picture traditions to the artistic occupation with amateur photography or abstraction as the formal reflection of the topic. With this comprehensive exhibition concept the cooperation between Cologne and Bonn recalls the three-part exhibition Lichtbildnisse. Das Porträt in der Fotografie, which Klaus Honnef conceived for the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn in 1982 and thus presents the development of the topic in the context of recent artistic and social changes.

Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne focuses on serial portraits that follow an artistic-documentary approach. The institution with its August Sander Archive and its central position in the field of documentary photography thus follows up on its programmatic orientation. On the one hand, the exhibition includes portraits from the institution’s own collection on the basis of the premise "A Look at the Collection" on the other hand they invited nine photographers from four continents to contribute extracts from their work. Both parts of the exhibition present an exciting approach to the genre of the portrait. Merely typological pictures alternate with narrative portraits, the static picture with the moving picture. It constantly becomes apparent how August Sander has had an international impact both methodically and in regard to content and how he has influenced portrait photography as a source of inspiration. The cooperation between the two institutions makes possible the first comprehensive overview of contemporary portrait photography in the 21st century. The exhibition "With Different Eyes" will be accompanied by events in both cities. The exhibition will later be on display at the Kunsthalle and Kunsthaus Nürnberg from October 2016. A catalogue will be published.

Accompanying the exhibition "With Different Eyes" Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur is presenting selected groups of work from its own collection by Diane Arbus, Jim Dine, Francesco Neri, Gabriele and Helmut Nothhelfer, Judith Joy Ross, Thomas Ruff, August Sander, Oliver Sieber, Rosalind Solomon and Albrecht Tübke. The distinguishing feature of the artists shown in Cologne is their documentary approach and their work in comparative series. This artistic concept, which can also be credited to August Sander, is highly acclaimed internationally.

Das Porträt gehört auch in der aktuellen Kunst – und hier vor allem in der Fotografie – zu den wichtigen und sich immer wieder neu formulierenden bildnerischen Inhalten. Unter dem übergreifenden Titel Mit anderen Augen. Das Porträt in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie zeigen die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Köln und das Kunstmuseum Bonn parallel stattfindende Gruppenausstellungen zu diesem immer wieder aktuellen Thema. Die Kooperation ermöglicht nun in Deutschland erstmals einen umfangreichen Überblick über die zeitgenössische Porträtfotografie im 21. Jahrhundert. Sich der Vielschichtigkeit, der Geschichte und Aktualität des Themas anzunähern, ist das Anliegen der Ausstellungskooperation zwischen den beiden Institutionen.

Vorgestellt werden in beiden Ausstellungshäusern zahlreiche künstlerische Konzepte, die das Genre aus vielen Perspektiven beleuchten. Fotografische Einzelbilder, Sequenzen, Rauminstallationen und filmische Arbeiten zeigen den Menschen in unterschiedlichen Lebensräumen, befassen sich mit seiner Präsenz im fotografischen Bild und mit der Bedeutung des Porträts in individualisierender, typisierender, kultureller und auch abstrahierender Hinsicht. Traditionelle Bildformen sowie innovative Ansätze greifen ineinander und verdeutlichen den Facettenreichtum des Themas.

Mit großer Freiheit greifen die in der Ausstellung vorgestellten Künstlerinnen und Künstler innerhalb ihrer Bildkonzepte auf die zur Verfügung stehenden medialen Mittel zurück und entfalten so einen eigenen Kosmos. Die ästhetischen Ansätze reichen vom Dokumentarischen bis zur Inszenierung, von der Neuformulierung ikonografischer Bildtraditionen bis hin zur künstlerischen Beschäftigung mit Aspekten der Amateurfotografie oder der Abstraktion als formale Reflexion des Themas. Sowohl das Individualbildnis wie das Porträt in seiner Reproduzierbarkeit und seinem Verfremdungspotenzial kommen nebeneinander zur Wirkung. Über das rein Künstlerische hinaus – denkt man etwa an Social Media – wird das eigene Bild und das des Anderen sogar zum Ausgangspunkt alltäglicher bildnerischer Kommunikation. Ablesbar wird zudem der Wandel, den die Fotografie in den letzten Jahrzehnten durchlaufen hat, sei es mit Blick auf die analoge und digitale Technik, sei es mit Blick auf die breitere künstlerische Akzeptanz.

Die an den beiden Standorten präsentierten Ausstellungen folgen dabei unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten:

Im Kunstmuseum Bonn liegt der Fokus auf Aspekten zeitgenössischer künstlerischer Bildkonzepte im Bereich der Porträtfotografie von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, die in Deutschland leben oder hierzu eine enge Verbindung haben. Mit ihren Arbeiten beziehen sie künstlerische, konzeptuelle und das Genre auch abstrakt reflektierende Ansätze mit ein. Damit knüpft das Haus an seinen Sammlungsschwerpunkt zur deutschen Kunst nach 1945 an. Ausgewählt sind Künstlerinnen und Künstler, deren bildnerische Ansätze vom Dokumentarischen bis zur Inszenierung, von der Neuformulierung ikonografischer Bildtraditionen bis zur künstlerischen Beschäftigung mit der Amateurfotografie oder der Abstraktion als formale Reflexion des Themas reichen. In inhaltlich gelenkten Räumen werden die jeweiligen Positionen in pointierten Gegenüberstellungen vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus sind auch Rauminszenierungen einzelner Künstler zu sehen.

Die Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Bonn zeigt folgende Künstlerinnen und Künstler: Ute Behrend, Katharina, Bosse, Clegg & Guttmann, Dunja Evers, Jan Paul Evers, Albrecht Fuchs, Bernhard Fuchs, Jitka Hanzlová, Uschi Huber, Jörg Paul Janka, Sabrina Jung, Keller/Wittwer, Annette Kelm, Erik Kessels, Dieter Kiessling, Jana Kölmel, Eckhard Korn, Christian Mayer, Katharina Mayer, Christopher Muller, Peter Piller, Barbara Probst, Timm Rautert, Daniela Risch, Thomas Ruff, Michael Schmidt, Daniel Schumann, Oliver Sieber, Beat Streuli, Thomas Struth, Katja Stuke, Wolfgang Tillmans, Christopher Williams und Tobias Zielony.

Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Köln konzentriert sich auf serielle Porträtarbeiten, die einem künstlerisch-dokumentarischen Ansatz folgen. Dies knüpft an die programmatische Ausrichtung der Institution an, in der das August Sander Archiv und damit eine zentrale Position der dokumentarisch aufgefassten Porträtfotografie einen wesentlichen Platz einnimmt. Zum einen präsentieren neun Fotografinnen und Fotografen aus vier Kontinenten Ausschnitte aus ihrem Schaffen: Charles Fréger (Frankreich), Pepa Hristova (Bulgarien/Deutschland), Pieter Hugo (Südafrika), Hiroh Kikai (Japan), Mark Neville (England), Jerry L. Thompson (USA), Mette Tronvoll (Norwegen), Albrecht Tübke (Italien/Deutschland) und Joerg Lipskoch (Deutschland).

Zum anderen werden unter der Prämisse "Blick in die Sammlung" Porträtpositionen aus dem eigenen Bestand vorgestellt: Diane Arbus, Jim Dine, Francesco Neri, Gabriele und Helmut Nothhelfer, Judith Joy Ross, Thomas Ruff, August Sander, Oliver Sieber und Rosalind Solomon und Albrecht Tübke.

Mit anderen Augen wird in beiden Städten von einem vielseitigen Veranstaltungsprogramm begleitet. Es erscheint ein gemeinsamer Katalog, großzügig gefördert von der Kunststiftung NRW.
