Through his manipulated images and self-portraits, Torsten Solin (*1972, Jena, Germany) explores social and gender stereotypes, creating a complex (photo) album that can be read in a variety of ways.

Memory, which usually stands at the heart of a photo album, is eradicated by the artist’s obsessive play with notions of identity and self-portrayal. The historical photographic materials that he uses as the basis for these new works are given a new function through artistic appropriation.

These new self-portraits and stagings are brought together as an imaginary photo album that reveals multiple layers of meaning. It also makes reference to the theme of the doppelganger, which became popular in the romantic literature of the 19th century, and remains a frequent theme in the arts and academic research today.

The exhibition scrutinizes the uniqueness of the self, its loss of identity, and its reconstruction.

Unter dem Titel "Das Album" zeigt die galerie hiltawsky neue Arbeiten von Torsten Solin (*1972, Jena, Deutschland). Mit seinen manipulierten Bildern bzw. den in anderen Szenen inszenierten Selbstportraits erforscht Torsten Solin (*1972, Jena) gesellschaftliche und geschlechtsspezifische Zugehörigkeiten. Damit öffnet er ein komplexes (Foto)Album neu und macht es vielfältig lesbar. Es geht um Identität und Selbstinszenierung.

Durch ein obsessives Spiel damit, wird die Erinnerung, das Hauptmotiv eines Fotoalbums, gelöscht. Das zugrunde liegende historische Fotomaterial bekommt durch den künstlerischen Aneignungsprozess eine neue Funktion und erlaubt zugleich unterschiedliche Interpretationen. Es entsteht ein imaginäres Fotoalbum mit neuen Selbstporträts und Selbstinszenierungen, die gleichzeitig Hinweise auf das Motiv des Doppelgängers sind. Obwohl es vor allem aus der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts, der Romantik, bekannt ist, bleibt es bis heute ein Forschungsgegenstand; nicht nur in Erzählungen.

Die Ausstellung untersucht und hinterfragt die Einzigartigkeit, den Identitätsverlust und ist gleichzeitig auch die Neukonstruktion des Selbst.
