Nataal is pleased to announce the group show New African Photography in association with Red Hook Labs. Opening 7 May in Brooklyn, the exhibition features six artists - Atong Atem (Sudan/Australia) www.nataal.com/atong-atem, Delphine Diaw Diallo (Senegal/France/US), Kristin-Lee Moolman (South Africa), Lakin Ogunbanwo (Nigeria), Namsa Leuba (Guinea/Switzerland) and Owise Abuzaid (Egypt).
The work of these selected photographers, both emerging and internationally recognised, express the diversity of narratives informing Africa’s rich visual language today. Encompassing documentary, fashion and portrait photography, the exhibition will explore multiple themes that challenge accepted notions of belonging and identity, the everyday and the fantastical; the past and the future; the public and the private.
The opening evening, which coincides with New York’s Frieze and 1:54 art fairs, will feature music by DJ Moma and Saada (Everyday People) plus a live act TBA. There will also be an artists’ talk and the show runs until 15 May.
Jimmy Moffat’s Red Hook Labs is a public benefit corporation dedicated to establishing creative communities and self-sustaining businesses in developing areas through education, events and programming. The space has four individual Labs: the Studio, Production, Gallery and School. The debut Gallery show, Jamie Hawksworth’s A Short, Pleasurable Journey, is on now.
