Following upon the success of previous auctions, which saw record prices achieved for works by Albert Renger-Patzsch, this year's autumn auction will also feature an important group of works by this photographer, including two motifs from his 1928 book "Die Welt ist schön" (lots 23 and 29 / 3-4,000 and 4-5,000 €). Some of the animal portraits and object studies, such as the image "Natterkopf" (adder's head) sold last spring, were passed directly from the photographer to the father of the present owner.

One particular highlight among the 19th century photographs on offer this season is a stereo daguerreotype portrait of a married couple (probably taken in Moscow) by Wilhelm Schneider (lot 1 / 1,500 €), as well as an assorted lot of rare views of Buenos Aires and Argentina by Samuel Boote and Samuel Rimathé (lot 3 / 1,000 €). Further highlights of classic 20th century photography include August Sander's picturesque views of the "Stadtwald zu Köln" and "Drachenfels" (lots 30/31 / each 5-6,000 €). Ilse Bing's 1932 shot of the reflection in a puddle on the "Rue de Valois, Paris" is also among these works (lot 43 / 4,000 €), as is Brassai's grotesque and ironic work "Roi de Soleil" from his graffiti series, here offered with a very fine provenance (lot 61 / 5-6,000 €).

Post-war photography is strongly represented, as usual, by artists from the "fotoform" group, primarily Otto Steinert, who is featured with a "Luminogram" from 1952, which is reminiscent of a gestural painting (lot 78 / 10-12,000 €). Peter Keetman, who this year would have celebrated his 100th birthday, is represented by three winter motifs and an abstract study (lots 74-77 / 2,200 - 3,500 €). Toni Schneider and Ludwig Windstosser feature industrial motifs (lots 71-73 / from 1,500 to 1,800 €). Artistically closely related to this group are the works by François Kollar, Ralph Steiner and György Kepes, the latter is one of the numerous Hungarian photographers to feature in this auction (lots 62/63 and 65 as well as 68/69, from 800 - 2,500 €).

German press photography is represented, alongside Thomas Hoepker, Barbara Klemm, Robert Lebeck and Will McBride primarily by Arno Fischer, featuring an assorted lot of his most significant motifs taken in Berlin (lot 92 / 5,000 €). Aaron Siskind's famous wall pictures (lots 108-110 / from 2,000 to 2,5 - 3,000 €) as well as the photographs of Harry Callahan (lots 113-115 / from 2,500 to 5 - 6,000 €) represent excellent examples of post-war American photography.

Glamour and beauty are reflected in the photographs of Eve Arnold, Bob Willoughby, Bill Ray and Burt Glinn, which were all taken in connection with film shoots. This is also the case of Helmut Newton's cool and gloomy portrait of Sigourney Weaver, which was taken on the set of the horror/science fiction classic "Alien 3" and has never come up for auction before (lot 135 / 8-10,000 €).

With their bizarre and puzzling images, Roger Ballen and Joel Peter Witkin were both lone wolves as well as extraordinary contemporary representatives of staged photography. Witkin is also a rarely seen guest on the German auction market (lots 137-141 / from 1,800 to 3 - 4,000 €).

Anknüpfend an die Erfolge der letzten Auktionen mit ihren internationalen Rekordpreisen für Photographien von Albert Renger-Patzsch wartet auch die diesjährige Herbstauktion mit einer Gruppe wichtiger Werke des Photographen auf, darunter zwei Motive (Lot 23 und 29 / 3 - 4.000 € und 4 - 5.000 €) aus seinem Buch "Die Welt ist schön" von 1928. Ein Teil der Tierportraits und Sachstudien gingen – wie der "Natterkopf" im Frühjahr – direkt vom Photographen an den Vater der heutigen Eigentümerin.

Aus dem Bereich der Photographie des 19. Jahrhunderts hervorzuheben sind die Stereo-Daguerreotypie eines Ehepaares (vermutlich Moskau) von Wilhelm Schneider (Lot 1 / 1.500 €) sowie ein Konvolut seltener Ansichten von Buenos Aires und Argentinien von Samuel Boote und Samuel Rimathé (Lot 3 / 1.000 €). Weitere Highlights der klassischen Photographie des 20. Jahrhunderts sind August Sanders malerische Ansichten vom "Stadtwald zu Köln" und vom "Drachenfels" (Lots 30/31 / jeweils 5 - 6.000 €), Ilse Bings 1932 entstandene Wasserspiegelung in einer Pfütze an der "Rue de Valois, Paris" (Lot 43 / 4.000 €) sowie Brassais grotesk-ironischer Sonnenkönig ("Roi de Soleil") aus seiner Graffiti-Serie mit guter Provenienz (Lot 61 / 5 - 6.000 €).

Die Photographie der Nachkriegszeit ist wie immer stark durch Mitglieder der 'fotoform'-Gruppe repräsentiert, allen voran zu nennen Otto Steinert mit seinem an ein gestisches Gemälde erinnernden "Luminogramm" aus dem Jahr 1952 (Lot 78 / 10 - 12.000 €). Peter Keetman, der in diesem Jahr seinen 100. Geburtstag gefeiert hätte, ist mit drei winterlichen Motiven und einer abstrakten Studie vertreten (Lots 74-77 / von 2.200 bis 3.500 €), Toni Schneiders und Ludwig Windstosser jeweils mit Industrieaufnahmen (Lots 71-73 / von 1.500 bis 1.800 €). Künstlerisch hiermit verwandt sind die Positionen von György Kepes, einer von zahlreichen ungarisch-stämmigen Photographen dieser Auktion, François Kollar und Ralph Steiner (Lots 62/63, 65 und 68/69 / von 800 bis 2.500 €). Für den Bereich der deutschen Reportagephotographie steht neben Thomas Höpker, Barbara Klemm, Robert Lebeck und Will McBride diesmal vor allem Arno Fischer mit einem Konvolut seiner wichtigsten Berlin-Motive (Lot 92 / 5.000 €). Aaron Siskinds berühmte Wandbilder (Lots 108-110 / von 2.000 bis 2.5 - 3.000 €) sowie die Photographien Harry Callahans (Lots 113-115 / von 2.500 bis 5 - 6.000 €) seien als hervorragende Beispiele für die amerikanische Nachkriegsphotographie genannt.

Glamour und Beauty spiegeln sich in den Photographien von Eve Arnold, Bob Willoughby, Bill Ray und Burt Glinn wider, entstanden jeweils am Rande von Dreharbeiten, was im Übrigen auch für Helmut Newtons Aufnahme von Sigourney Weaver gilt: Das unterkühlt-düstere Portrait entstand am Set des dritten Teils des Science-Fiction-Horror-Klassikers "Alien 3" und wurde noch nie im Rahmen einer internationalen Auktion angeboten (Lot 135 / 8 - 10.000 €).

Mit ihren ebenso schrägen wie rätselhaften Aufnahmen sind Roger Ballen und Joel Peter Witkin gleichermaßen Einzelgänger und zwei der bemerkenswertesten zeitgenössischen Vertreter der inszenierten Photographie, Witkin zudem ein seltener Gast auf dem deutschen Auktionsmarkt (Lots 137-141 / von 1.800 bis 3 - 4.000 €).
