The exhibition series with/against the flow. Contemporary Photographic Interventions presents artists who live in Germany, have established their own distinct visual idioms and are now interrogating the medium of photography afresh. It is the forms that their artistic interventions take that connect their various positions. Regardless of what motivates the artists or what interests them in terms of content, in the work they do they intervene in the very substance of the image or in external reality itself. The question remains as to whether this work should still be labelled “documentary” or whether it is, in fact, a form of realism that spills over into fiction.

Curated by Florian Ebner, head of the Department of Photography at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, and author Christin Müller, Leipzig.

Viktoria Binschtok reflects on the medium of photography in her photographic work and uses subtle shifts of context to address the function and representation of images. She makes equal use of both her own photographs and images from the internet and other media sources.

'This permanent give and take of image-based information has expanded our role over the years, from that of the passive user to that of the active exhibitionist. Everyone who shares pictures has become more or less a part of this visual culture.'

Binschtok was born in 1972 in Moscow. She grew up in West Germany, and studied photography and free arts at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts.Viktoria Binschtok lives and works in Berlin.

Michael Schäfer’s approach to photography is a form of artistic mimicry, a way of appropriating images so as to deconstruct them. The artist’s gaze fixes on the over-determination of press images, their surplus of meaning and significance that literally presents the viewer with a historical and political constellation as a finished and closed interpretation.

'We are living in a context increasingly characterized by overlapping and competing realities and thus also overlapping and competing realisms. A superficial unity of human identity – and, by analogy, the unity of the image – is an illusion that cannot be upheld today.'

Michael Schäfer was born in 1964 in Sigmaringen and lives and works in Berlin. He studied photography design at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and photography at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. Schäfer was an on the artistic staff in Leipzig and today teaches at Hartford Art School, Connecticut, and the Berlin University of the Arts.

Wir leben im Zeitalter der Bilder: Fotografien dominieren Nachrichten- und Informationskanäle, kommen immer öfter aus der Handykamera und verbreiten sich schneeballartig im Netz. Als Auftakt zu der neuen Ausstellungsreihe "with/against the flow" stellt das ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) in einer Doppelausstellung im Heidelberger Kunstverein Arbeiten vor, die solche Medienbilder aufgreifen.

Viktoria Binschtok und Michael Schäfer verarbeiten Bilder aus den Medien weiter und reflektieren deren Funktionsweisen und angelegte Rezeptionsstrukturen. Durch diese Eingriffe wird die vorgefertigte Wirklichkeit der Medien sichtbar. Gleichzeitig untersuchen beide Künstler die sich anbahnende Autonomie von Bildern durch digitale Algorithmen. Mit dieser Arbeitsweise stehen Viktoria Binschtok und Michael Schäfer in der Tradition des künstlerischen Interesses an den Massenmedien der 1970er Jahre und repräsentieren eine jüngere Generation von Künstlern, die das Fotografische und Dokumentarische neu befragen.

Die Auftaktausstellung wird am 17. Juni 2016 im Heidelberger Kunstverein eröffnet. Im Anschluss geht sie auf eine mehrjährige Welttournee, die im Dezember 2016 im Georgian National Museum beginnt.

Die Ausstellungs- und Publikationsreihe "with/against the flow" stellt zeitgenössische fotografische Interventionen in den Mittelpunkt. Initiiert wurde die Reihe vom ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), das mit Ausstellungen Einblicke in bildende Kunst, Fotografie und Film, Design und Architektur des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts gibt. Kuratiert wird "with/against the flow" von Florian Ebner, Leiter der Fotografischen Sammlung im Museum Folkwang, Essen, und Christin Müller, freie Kuratorin und Autorin, Leipzig.

Viktoria Binschtok reflektiert in ihren fotografischen Arbeiten das Medium Fotografie und thematisiert durch subtile Kontextverschiebungen die Funktion und Repräsentation von Bildern. Hierzu bedient sie sich gleichberechtigt neben eigenen Fotografien auch aus dem Fundus des Internets und anderer medialer Bildquellen.

"Dieses ständige Geben und Nehmen von bildbasierten Informationen hat unsere Rolle im Laufe der Jahre vom passiven User zum aktiven Exhibitionisten erweitert. Wir alle, die Bilder teilen, sind somit mehr oder weniger Teil dieser visuellen Kultur geworden."

Die Künstlerin wurde 1972 in Moskau geboren, wuchs in Westdeutschland auf und studierte Fotografie und freie Kunst an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. Viktoria Binschtok lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Michael Schäfers Umgang mit Fotografie ist eine Form der künstlerischen Mimikry, eine Art der Einverleibung von Bildern, um sie dekonstruieren zu können. Der Blick des Künstlers reibt sich an der Überdeterminierung der Pressebilder, ihrem Überschuss an Bedeutung und Sinn, der dem Betrachter eine historisch politische Konstellation als fertige Interpretation förmlich vorsetzt.

"Wir leben in einem Umfeld, das zunehmend von sich überlagernden und konkurrierenden Realitäten und somit auch Realismen gekennzeichnet ist. Die oberflächliche Einheit der menschlichen Identität und analog dazu des Bildes ist eine Illusion und nicht haltbar."

Michael Schäfer wurde 1964 in Sigmaringen geboren und lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Er studierte Fotodesign an der FH Dortmund sowie Fotografie an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig.
