Foam 3h: Olya Oleinic

From 16 September onwards, Foam devotes its project space 3h to Made of China, brand new work by visual artist Olya Oleinic (1991, Moldova).

In her practice she researches the aesthetics of advertising as a tool for communication. The circulation of advertisements is a determinant aspect of our culture; artistic reflection upon this subject provides insight into the effects and influence of commerce upon daily life. For Made of China, Oleinic researched one of the main driving forces of our contemporary advertising aesthetics: China.

Olya Oleinic visited China before. The country fascinates her tremendously. Buddhism, Communism and consumerism seem to exist side by side. This contrarian reality is alien to the average European. At the same time the culture of such an important exporting country echoes on an international scale, as we are also confronted daily with products ‘Made in China’.

In the summer of 2016 Oleinic returned to the remarkable, influential country to deepen her previous research to that effect. Her new work floats between straightforward observations and the poetry of personal impressions. Or in her own words: “For the upcoming show I hope to recreate my experiences and transform my sentiments into imagery, thereby reflecting on the extreme consumerism and other characteristic queerness of China.”
