The exhibition "EMMY‘S WORLD" is the result of an unusual, long-term project: starting in 2009, the Dutch photographer, Hanne van der Woude took part in the lives of the aging artist couple Emmy Eerdmans and Ben Joosten. The young photographer spent an intensive time with both of the creative free spirits that have been married for over 50 years, in their home, a former school in the Dutch region of Betuwe, in the province of Gelderland. She participated in their daily lives and accompanied them with her camera. She photographed Emmy with her favourite guinea hen, Klara, while she was drawing or gathering branches in an enchanted-like garden. She portrayed Ben with his brothers as they posed boisterous and bare-chested in an old washtub. She went with the older couple on a road trip to the south of France, where Ben’s older brother Egbert had lived for a long time. She also captured very intimate moments, such as Emmy lovingly taking care of Ben during the last days of his life.

"EMMY’S WORLD" shows images of people that despite their age have never lost their love of life and freedom. The focus of the exhibit is on the now 85 year old Emmy Eerdmans. In 2009, Hanne van der Woude met the graphic artist Ben Joosten by chance and spontaneously asked him if she could make a portrait of him. After he agreed and she went to his house, she met Emmy and was fascinated with this unconventional, self-contained, strong yet strangely enraptured woman. "I decided to decipher Emmy", remembers van der Woude today.

The photographer approached the painter and her decelerated world with the tranquillity of an analogue camera. With insightful images, van der Woude shows a woman who lives her own life without caring what others think of it. "I experienced Emmy’s life as a kind of dream world, far away from reality and that is how I wanted to portray it", said the photographer.

"EMMY‘S WORLD" is not a photo reportage, but the result of an unusual collaboration between artists: the photographer Hanne, the paintress Emmy and the graphic artist Ben. A deep bond was created between the three of them that went far beyond the project. So that it was just natural that Hanne accompanied them to the south of France and documented the rural life of Ben’s brother Egbert. "They were like a family for me and I often visited them without my camera and just spent valuable time with them", states van der Woude.

"EMMY’S WORLD addresses a number of current social themes", says Celina Lunsford, artistic director of the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. "These include growing older, maintaining the zest for life and creativity in old age, independence, caring, intimate relationships and also this friendship between generations."

With 42 partly large format photographs Hanne van der Woude presents heart-warming insights into this very unique world in the exhibition at Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. In addition, several sketches, notebooks and photographs from Emmy herself, along with a portrait that Emmy painted of Hanne while she was photographing her will be shown. The heart of the exhibition consists of a video installation that was put together especially for Frankfurt. Short films will be shown on 18 monitors, each one a short excerpt from the life of the elderly couple. Hanne van der Woude connected the touching imagery with a subtle and also typical, continuous tone from Emmy’s world: quiet murmuring, grumbling and shuffling.

The Fotografie Forum Frankfurt presents the exhibition in cooperation with the Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography, Amsterdam, and with support from the Mondriaan Fund. This exhibition represents Fotografie Forum Frankfurt' contribution to the honorary guest program, "Flanders & the Netherlands" of the Frankfurter Book Fair 2016.

"EMMY’S WORLD" is Hanne van der Woude's first solo exhibition in Germany. The Dutch photographer is represented by the Van der Mieden Gallery, Antwerp, (www.vandermieden.com). The photographs from EMMY‘S WORLD can also be ordered through Fotografie Forum Frankfurt.

Es geht um Lebenskunst, ums gemeinsame Altwerden, um innige Beziehung und kostbare Zeit: Fünf Jahre lang hat die junge niederländische Fotografin Hanne van der Woude ein altes Künstlerpaar mit der Kamera begleitet. Die Ausstellung ist van der Woudes erste Einzelschau in Deutschland und Beitrag zum Ehrengastprogramm der Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Die Ausstellung "EMMY‘S WORLD" ist Ergebnis eines ungewöhnlichen Langzeitprojekts: Ab 2009 nimmt die niederländische Fotografin Hanne van der Woude mehr als fünf Jahre teil am Leben des betagten Künstlerpaares Emmy Eerdmans und Ben Joosten. Die junge Künstlerin verbringt intensive Zeit mit den beiden kreativen Freigeistern, die mehr als 50 Jahre miteinander verheiratet waren, in deren Zuhause, einem ehemaligen Schulhaus in der niederländischen Region Betuwe, Provinz Gelderland. Sie wird Teil ihres Alltags und begleitet sie mit der Kamera. Fotografiert Emmy mit ihrem Lieblingsperlhuhn Klara, beim Zeichnen oder beim Sammeln von Ästen im verwunschen wirkenden Garten. Porträtiert Ben mit seinen Brüdern, wie sie übermütig mit freiem Oberkörper oder in einem alten Waschzuber posieren. Geht mit den alten Leuten auf einen Roadtrip nach Südfrankfreich, wo Bens Bruder Egbert lange lebte. Auch sehr intime Momente hält die Fotografin fest, etwa wenn Emmy den schon todkranken Ben liebevoll pflegt.

"EMMY’S WORLD" zeigt Bilder von Menschen, die trotz ihres Alters nie ihre Lebenslust und ihre Ungebundenheit verloren haben. Im Mittelpunkt der Schau steht die heute 85-jährige Emmy Eerdmans. 2009 hatte Hanne van der Woude den Grafiker Ben Joosten zufällig kennengelernt und ihn spontan gefragt, ob sie ihn porträtieren dürfe. Als sie dann nach seiner Zustimmung bei ihm zuhause auf Emmy traf, war die Fotografin fasziniert von dieser eigenwilligen, in sich ruhenden, starken und doch eigenartig entrückten Frau. "Ich beschloss, Emmy zu enträtseln", erinnert sich van der Woude heute.

Mit der Ruhe der analogen Kamera näherte sich die Fotografin der Malerin und ihrer entschleunigten Welt. In einfühlsamen Aufnahmen zeigt van der Woude eine Frau, die ihr eigenes Leben lebt und sich wenig schert um das, was andere darüber denken. "Ich empfinde Emmys Leben als eine Art Traumwelt, weit weg von der Wirklichkeit, und so wollte ich sie auch porträtieren", sagt die Fotokünstlerin.

"EMMY‘S WORLD" ist keine Fotoreportage, sondern das Ergebnis einer ungewöhnlichen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Künstlern: der Fotografin Hanne, der Malerin Emmy und dem Grafiker und Zeichner Ben. Zwischen den dreien ist über das Projekt hinaus eine tiefe Verbundenheit entstanden. So war es ganz selbstverständlich, dass Hanne mit nach Südfrankreich fuhr und dort das zurückgezogene Leben von Bens Bruder Egbert dokumentierte. "Sie waren wie eine Familie für mich, oft war ich ohne Kamera zu Besuch und verbrachte einfach nur kostbare Zeit mit ihnen", berichtet van der Woude.

"EMMY’S WORLD greift gleich eine Reihe aktueller gesellschaftlicher Themen auf", sagt Celina Lunsford, künstlerische Leiterin des Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. "Dazu gehören das Älterwerden, Lebenslust und Kreativität im Alter, Unabhängigkeit, Fürsorge, innige Beziehung und eben auch diese Freundschaft zwischen Generationen."

Mit 42 teils großformatigen Fotografien vermittelt Hanne van der Woude im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt anrührende Einblicke in diese ganz eigene Welt. Hinzu kommen einige Skizzen- und Notizbücher sowie Fotografien von Emmy selbst und ein Porträt, das sie von Hanne gemalt hat, während diese sie fotografierte. Herzstück der Ausstellung ist eine eigens für Frankfurt konstruierte Videoinstallation: Auf 18 Monitoren sind Kurzfilme zu sehen, jeder für sich ein kleiner Ausschnitt aus dem Leben der alten Leute. Verbunden hat Hanne van der Woude die bewegten Bilder mit einem dezenten und zugleich typischen Dauerton aus Emmys Welt: leisem Murmeln, Grummeln und Schlurfen.

Das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt zeigt HANNE VAN DER WOUDE. EMMY‘S WORLD in Kooperation mit Huis Marseille, Museum für Fotografie, Amsterdam, und mit Unterstützung des Mondriaan Fund. Die Ausstellung ist zugleich Beitrag des Fotografie Forum Frankfurt zum Ehrengastprogramm “Flandern & die Niederlande” der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2016.

"EMMY’S WORLD" ist Hanne van der Woudes erste Einzelausstellung in Deutschland. Die niederländische Fotografin wird von der Galerie van der Mieden, Antwerpen, vertreten (www.vandermieden.com). Die Fotoarbeiten können auch im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt erworben werden.
