"Panorama" is the first international retrospective dedicated to the work of Italian photographer and filmmaker, Francesco Jodice (*1967), spanning twenty years of his artistic practice. In Panorama, places, times, and stories collide, addressing sociological questions about our urban world. By presenting a wide range of documents such as maps, books, newspaper clippings, and interviews spread out on forty-metre long table components, the exhibition offers insights into Jodice’s artistic process that strikes a fine balance between theory and practice. Panorama presents an expansive geopolitical scenario and an eclectic mosaic of a contemporary world in flux.
In Francesco Jodice’s comprehensive and visually compelling universe the thought processes and developmental stages leading up to his works are as centrally important as the final form of the works themselves. Panorama thus makes these processes behind Jodice’s artistic research and work accessible. The exhibition invites viewers to follow the threads of Jodice’s “fluid” working process, reflecting the sociological and philosophical tendencies of our time. This comprises not only his interdisciplinary artistic approach but also the techniques he employs, the systems he moves within and the various audiences that he addresses.

The six projects presented at Fotomuseum are exemplary of Jodice’s work as a whole. By applying processes such as "engagement", "networking", "research", and "storytelling" and exploring his themes in relation to the human scale, his works offer an experience of a world that seems both immediate and distant. "What We Want", a photographic atlas of the evolution of a social landscape that Jodice began in 1996, presents 150 major cities and remote places whose commonalities are greater than their differences. The same is true of the people that he tracked in the manner of a private detective for his series "The Secret Traces" (1996–97) and also of his three-part series of films "Citytellers" (2006–10), case studies and emblematic portraits of geopolitical realities featuring São Paulo, Dubai, and the Aral Sea. In "The Room" (2009–16), not photographs but collected newspaper pages form the basis of the work, coated almost completely with black paint, except for a few scraps of words. "Solid Sea" (2002) stems from a collaborative project with the collective Multiplicity. First exhibited at documenta11, the installation shows the Mediterranean transforming into a compacted and intimidating solid form. Assuming a hypothetical aggregate state, this imagery points to a constant in an remarkably prescient way, at a time when societies and national states are rapidly dissolving.

Francesco Jodice lives in Milan, where he is Professor for Urban Visual Anthropology at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) and teaches photography at the Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia. His works have been shown at documenta11, the Venice Biennale, the Bienal de São Paulo, the Tate Modern, Reina Sofia, and Castello de Rivoli, among others.

The exhibition is organised in cooperation with Camera – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin and is jointly curated by Francesco Zanot and Thomas Seelig. A richly illustrated catalogue published by Spector Books accompanies the exhibition, showing the creative visual universe of Francesco Jodice in its totality. Conceived as a deconstructed anthology, the catalogue draws exciting connections between the fields of art, politics, philosophy, anthropology, urban planning, and geography.

"Panorama" ist die erste internationale Retrospektive des italienischen Fotografen und Filmemachers Francesco Jodice (*1967), die zwanzig Jahre seines künstlerischen Schaffens umspannt. In Panorama treffen nicht nur Orte, Zeiten und Geschichten aufeinander, um soziologische Fragen an die urbane Welt zu adressieren. Über eine Vielzahl von Dokumenten wie Landkarten, Bücher, Zeitungsausschnitte oder Interviews, ausgebreitet auf 40 Meter langen Tischelementen, gibt die Ausstellung auch einen Einblick in den Schaffensprozess des Künstlers zwischen Theorie und Praxis. "Panorama" ist ein geopolitischer Rundblick und ein eklektisches Mosaik unserer stets im Wandel begriffenen Gegenwart.

Im umfangreichen und bildgewaltigen Universum von Francesco Jodice ist der Denk- und Entstehungsprozess ebenso zentral wie die letztendliche Form seiner Werke. Entsprechend bildet Panorama die Prozesse ab, aus dem Francesco Jodices künstlerische Forschung und Arbeit hervorgeht. Die Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, den Spuren von Jodices "fluider" Arbeitsweise nachzugehen, welche soziologische und philosophische Tendenzen unserer Zeit widerspiegeln. Dies betrifft sowohl seinen interdisziplinären künstlerischen Ansatz, die von ihm angewandten Techniken und verhandelten Systeme sowie die verschiedenen Publikumsgruppen, an die er sich richtet.

Aus Jodices Gesamtwerk werden im Fotomuseum sechs beispielhafte Projekte präsentiert. Sie machen eine Welt erfahrbar, die nah und gleichzeitig fern wirkt, indem er sie über zentrale Verfahren wie "Engagement", "Vernetzung", "Recherche" und "Erzählkunst" dekonstruiert und im Massstab zum Menschen befragt. "What We Want", Jodices 1996 begonnener fotografischer Atlas von der Evolution der sozialen Landschaft, zeigt beispielsweise 150 Metropolen und abseitige Orte, deren Gemeinsamkeiten grösser sind als ihre Unterschiede. Gleiches gilt für die Menschen, denen er für seine Arbeit "The Secret Traces" von 1996–1997 in der Manier eines Privatdetektivs nachspürte, oder für die filmischen Fallstudien zu São Paulo, Dubai und dem Aralsee in "Citytellers" (2006–2010), einer dreiteiligen Reihe über geopolitische Sinnbilder. In "The Room" (2009–2016) stehen für einmal keine Fotografien im Zentrum, sondern gesammelte Zeitungsseiten, die Jodice bis auf wenige Wortfetzen fast vollständig mit schwarzer Farbe übermalen lässt. "Solid Sea" (2002) geht aus der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kollektiv Multiplicity hervor. Erstmals auf der documenta11 gezeigt, verwandelt sich das Mittelmeer in dieser Rauminstallation in eine verfestigte und bedrohlich solide Form. Als hypothetischer Aggregatszustand markiert es eine bemerkenswert vorausschauende Konstante in Zeiten sich rasch auflösender Gesellschaften und Nationalstaaten.

Francesco Jodice lebt in Mailand, wo er als Professor für Urbane Visuelle Anthropologie an der NABA Kunstakademie sowie als Dozent für Fotografie an der Fondazione Forma per la Fotografia tätig ist. Seine Werke waren unter anderem auf der Documenta11, auf den Biennalen von Venedig und São Paulo, in der Tate Modern, der Reina Sofia sowie im Castello de Rivoli zu sehen.

Die Ausstellung entsteht in Zusammenarbeit mit Camera – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia, Turin, und wird gemeinsam von Francesco Zanot und Thomas Seelig kuratiert.

Begleitend erscheint ein reich illustrierter Katalog im Spector Verlag, der das schöpferische Universum von Francesco Jodice in seiner Ganzheit zeigt. Als dekonstruierte Anthologie konzipiert, werden in der Publikation die Felder Kunst, Politik, Philosophie, Anthropologie, Stadtplanung und Geografie in spannungsreiche Beziehungen gesetzt.
