Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2017

For the sixth edition of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend, 3 – 5 February 2017, more than 70 galleries, museums, institutions and 'off-spaces' will be presenting a varied programme about the medium of photography. The exhibitions will range from classic photography through to current trends with new media. Following the great success of recent years, the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend has become a popular feature of Duesseldorf's arts and cultural scene and is also attracting more and more international interest. After the opening weekend it will still be possible to see many of the exhibitions in the galleries and institutions for several weeks.

The Duesseldorf Photo Weekend traditionally opens at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf. At the vernissage on Thursday, 2 February 2017, the Forum will be presenting no less than three exhibitions: Peter Lindbergh / Garry Winogrand: Women on Street, Thomas Mailaender: The Fun Archive and Perfect Storm, a Portfolio Review exhibition.

On the occasion of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2017, in an exhibition entitled Women on Street, from 3 February to 30 April 2017, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf will be presenting two masters of photography - Peter Lindbergh and Garry Winogrand. Rare colour photographs taken by Garry Winogrand from the 50s and 60s will also be on show here for the first time. With The Fun Archive the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf will be presenting the first major Thomas Mailaender retrospective in Germany. The French artist collects artefacts of cyber culture – anonymous amateur photographs, Internet memes and cyber trash –, which he archives, processes and channels into the world of high culture. From 3 February to 30 April 2017 he will be opening his Fun Archive at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf and will be constructing spectacular room installations such as the Fun Archive Headquarter and the Chicken Museum.

As in previous years, the Portfolio Review will likewise take place at the NRW-Forum. This year, the presentations of the 15 short-listed artists will be on the Saturday and the award ceremony on the Sunday. On the occasion of the fifth Portfolio Review, there will be a group exhibition with works by nine artists from the previous years. This exhibition will be entitled Perfect Storm and will showcase the current themes and approaches that are influencing the young generation of artists working with photography. The works in the exhibition will be united by the idea of posing the question regarding the limitation and legitimisation of the expansion of image space and the productivity that ensues from this floating state.

The Benrath Palace and Park Foundation will be presenting the works of the photographer Marcus Schwier from 5 February – 26 March. His multifaceted work comprises series from the fields of architectural and landscape photography. The thematic blocks in the exhibition include, in particular, a series of night-time images from North and South American cities in which the light spaces have been artistically arranged by Schwier. The theme for another series is the greenhouse as a model of industrialised agriculture. Two groups of works are based on the use of a long tripod that makes it possible to take voyeuristic photographs of people and, by the same token, reflects the images of the world that are generated through surveillance technology.

A Photo Book Salon will take place in the historic library on the newly built campus of the Hochschule Düsseldorf (HSD) [University of Applied Sciences]. In addition to an exhibition of the short list for the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards, an invitation to participate in the Salon has also be extended to European book publishers that focus mainly on the production of photo books. Furthermore, the HSD campus will also be a venue for exhibitions and talks.

The Philara Collection, with its new premises in Flingern, will be showing works by Sabine Dusend and Alex Grein, two young graduates of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The two artists use photography to draw closer to the essential features of traditional picture production, the difference between man and machine as well as between an object and its representation.

In Number Thirteen two exhibition concepts will be combined in the Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf. At the hub of the presentation will stand the large-format video installation Factory of The Sun by Hito Steyerl. In parallel to this, but in a separate space on the first floor, will be the Missed Connections group exhibition curated by the artist Jennifer Chan at the invitation of Hito Steyerl and in cooperation with the Julia Stoschek Collection.

The Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Düsseldorf (a memorial site to the victims of the Nazi regime) will be taking part for the first time, in 2017, in the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend and will be dedicating an exhibition to the artist and lawyer Fred Stein. In 1933, as a socialist and a Jew, he had to flee from the National Socialists in Dresden. As an exile in Paris, out of necessity, he turned his hobby into a profession. He opened a photo studio and, in the course of this, revealed his outstanding talent. He turned out to be a master of portraiture and spontaneous street photography.

At the 'Haus der Universität', the Open Loop exhibition will present unpublished documents and photographs - from the estate of the Berlin film-maker Hansjürgen Pohland - of Will McBride, Michael Marton and Jean-Gil Chodziesner-Bonne. Lectures, symposiums, discussion rounds and film screenings at the 'Haus der Universität' and also at the Hochschule Düsseldorf will supplement the programme for the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend.

The galleries, which will all open on Friday, 3 February 2017 for the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend from 6 pm – 9 pm, will once again be making an exciting contribution with their exhibitions.

Unter dem Titel Women on Street zeigt das NRW-Forum Düsseldorf zum Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2017 vom 3. Februar bis zum 30. April 2017 zwei Meister der Fotografie, Peter Lindbergh und Garry Winogrand. Erstmalig sind hier auch Garry Winogrands seltene Farbfotografien aus den 50er und 60er Jahren zu sehen.

Mit The Fun Archive präsentiert das NRW-Forum Düsseldorf Thomas Mailänders erste große Retrospektive in Deutschland. Der französische Künstler sammelt Artefakte der Netzkultur – anonyme Amateurfotografien, Internet-Meme und Netztrash – die er archiviert, weiterverarbeitet und in die Welt der Hochkultur einschleust. Vom 3. Februar bis zum 30. April 2017 öffnet er sein Fun Archive im NRW-Forum Düsseldorf und errichtet spektakuläre Rauminstallationen wie das Fun Archive Headquarter und das Chicken Museum.

Das Portfolio Review findet wie in den Vorjahren ebenfalls im NRW-Forum statt. Dieses Jahr am Samstag mit den Präsentationen der 15 Shortlist-Künstler und am Sonntag mit der Preisvergabe. Anlässlich des fünften Portfolio Reviews findet eine Gruppenausstellung mit den Arbeiten von neun Künstlern der letzten Jahre statt – Perfect Storm ist eine Präsentation aktueller Themen und Ansätze, die eine junge Generation fotografisch arbeitender Künstler prägen. Die Werke der Ausstellung vereint dabei einen Impuls, der die Frage nach der Limitierung und Legitimierung der Expansion des Bildraums stellt, und in dieser Schwebe produktiv werden lässt.

Die Stiftung Schloss und Park Benrath präsentiert Arbeiten des Fotografen Marcus Schwier. Sein facettenreiches Werk umfasst Serien aus den Bereichen Architektur- und Landschaftsfotografie. Zu den ausgestellten Themenblöcken zählt u.a. eine Serie mit Nachtaufnahmen aus nord- und südamerikanischen Städten, in der Schwier kunstvoll Lichträume inszeniert. Eine weitere Serie thematisiert das Gewächshaus als Leitbild einer industrialisierten Landwirtschaft. Zwei Werkkomplexe beruhen auf dem Einsatz eines Langstativs, das voyeuristische Bilder von Personen ebenso ermöglicht, wie es das durch Überwachungstechnik generierte Bild der Welt reflektiert.

Ein Photo Book Salon in der historischen Bibliothek findet auf dem neu erbauten Campus der Hochschule Düsseldorf (HSD) statt. Neben der Ausstellung der Shortlist des Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards, sind hierzu europäische Buchverlage eingeladen, die sich hauptsächlich der Edition von Fotobüchern widmen. Auf dem Campus der HSD werden außerdem Ausstellungen und Vorträge veranstaltet.

Die Sammlung Philara, mit ihren neuen Räumlichkeiten in Flingern, zeigt Werke von Sabine Dusend und Alex Grein, zwei junge Absolventinnen der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Mittels der Fotografie nähern sich die beiden Künstlerinnen den Wesensmerkmalen traditioneller Bildproduktion, der Divergenz von Mensch und Maschine sowie von Objekt und Repräsentation.

In Number Thirteen werden zwei Ausstellungskonzepte in der Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf vereint. Im Zentrum der Präsentation steht die großformatige Videoinstallation Factory of The Sun von Hito Steyerl. Parallel dazu, aber räumlich voneinander getrennt, hat die Künstlerin Jennifer Chan auf Einladung von Hito Steyerl und in Kooperation mit der Julia Stoschek Collection im ersten Stock die Gruppenausstellung Missed Connections kuratiert.

Die Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Düsseldorf ist 2017 erstmalig Teilnehmer beim Duesseldorf Photo Weekend und widmet dem Künstler und Juristen Fred Stein eine Werkschau. 1933 muss er als Sozialist und Jude vor den Nationalsozialisten aus Dresden fliehen. Im Pariser Exil macht er notgedrungen aus seinem Hobby einen Beruf – er eröffnet ein Fotostudio und offenbart dabei herausragendes Talent. Er entpuppt sich als Meister des Porträts und der spontanen Straßenfotografie.

Aus dem Nachlass des Berliner Filmemachers Hansjürgen Pohland werden in der Ausstellung Open Loop, unveröffentlichte Dokumente und Fotografien von Will McBride, Michael Marton, Jean-Gil Chodziesner-Bonne im Haus der Universität präsentiert. Vorträge, Symposien, Diskussionsrunden und Filmvorführungen im Haus der Universität und auch an der Hochschule Düsseldorf ergänzen das Programm des Duesseldorf Photo Weekends. Düsseldorf ist bekannt für seine vielfältige und renommierte Galerien-Szene. Auch 2017 sind wieder spannende Beiträge nationaler und internationaler Künstler zu sehen und neu zu entdecken.

Die beteiligten Galerien eröffnen ihre Ausstellungen gemeinsam am Freitag, dem 3. Februar 2017 zum Duesseldorf Photo Weekend von 18 – 21 Uhr.
