Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, is presenting 70 day and night pictures, spanning a period of more than 20 years, from the artistic oeuvre of Axel Hütte (*1951), including a number of new works and works that have never been shown publicly before.

Axel Hütte, who for a long time has been regarded as a master of contemporary landscape photography, was a student in the famous Bernd Becher class at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, as were Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff and Candida Höfer. Together they rank among the important, internationally renowned representatives of the Düsseldorf School of Photography.

The comprehensive exhibition of the Düsseldorf-based photographer, who to this day travels to all continents for his fascinating photographs, impressively reflects his interest in the perception of the picture, of representation and reality. Axel Hütte’s photographs surprise us with pictorial structures that place his work beyond the documentary. With water reflections, the dark of the night, but also with vertical or horizontal elements of architecture he composes atmospheric pictorial worlds. Making use of the blurring created by wafts of fog, and of structures found in bridge architecture, he creates both perspectival and atmospheric landscape pictures.

Hütte’s photographs are characterised by a profound stillness, by an overwhelming sense of loneliness. The process of creating his pictures, which he takes using a plate camera, usually makes considerable demands on his patience. In photographs from the African desert, the Antarctic Sea, or in his nocturnal pictures of metropolises – Axel Hütte shows moments of astonishment and contemplation, inviting the visitor to take a closer look.

The presentation of Hütte’s early work shown simultaneously at the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop (24 Sep 2017 – 7 Jan 2018) widens the perspective to encompass the Düsseldorf photographer’s early artistic work.

In einer 70 Werke umfassenden Ausstellung zum künstlerischen Schaffen von Axel Hütte (*1951) zeigt das Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, zum Teil neue und erstmals öffentlich präsentierte Tag- und Nachtbilder des Fotografen aus mehr als zwanzig Jahren.

Axel Hütte, der seit langem als ein Meister der zeitgenössischen Landschaftsfotografie gilt, ist wie Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff und Candida Höfer aus der berühmten Klasse von Bernd Becher an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie hervorgegangen. Gemeinsam mit ihnen zählt er zu den bedeutenden, international anerkannten Vertretern der Düsseldorfer Fotoschule.

Die große Werkschau des in Düsseldorf lebenden Fotografen, der für seine faszinierenden Aufnahmen bis heute alle Kontinente bereist, spiegelt in beeindruckender Weise sein Interesse an der Wahrnehmung von Bild, Abbild und Realität wider. Die Fotografien von Axel Hütte überraschen durch Bildstrukturen, die seine Arbeit jenseits des Dokumentarischen verorten lassen. Mit Wasserspiegelungen, dem Dunkel der Nacht, aber auch mit vertikalen oder horizontalen Architekturelementen komponiert er stimmungsvolle Bildräume. Eine durch Nebelschwaden gebotene Unschärfe des Lichts nutzt er ebenso wie die Gliederung von Brückenbauten zur Schaffung gleichsam perspektivischer wie atmosphärischer Landschaftsbilder.

Hüttes Fotografien sind geprägt von einer unendlichen Stille, von einer überwältigenden Einsamkeit. Seine mit der Plattenkamera aufgenommenen Bilder haben ihm bei ihrer künstlerischen Umsetzung meist große Geduld abverlangt. Ob Aufnahmen aus der afrikanischen Wüste, dem antarktischen Eismeer oder Nachtbilder von Megacities – Axel Hütte zeigt Augenblicke des Erstaunens und Innehaltens, er lädt den Betrachter ein, genauer hinzuschauen.

Die parallel zur Ausstellung im Museum Kunstpalast im Joseph Albers Museum Quadrat, Bottrop, (24.9.2017 bis 7.1.2018) gezeigte Präsentation zum Frühwerk von Axel Hütte erweitert den Blick auf die Anfänge der künstlerischen Arbeit des Düsseldorfer Fotografen.
