The Edwynn Houk Gallery is delighted to announce that it now represents the Finnish American photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen, celebrated for his highly original nude self-portraits set mostly within the natural landscape. A significant selection of his photographs will be on view at the Edwynn Houk Gallery in Zurich until the 20th of May 2017.

Minkkinen’s remarkable black and white pictures show abstracted fragments of his body immersed in different natural or constructed spaces all over the world. His camera captures the moment when his body is transformed and shaped by the surrounding environment and in return the image shows a landscape that has been altered through the presence of his body. Minkkinen’s body of work, hovering between surrealism and expressionism, occupies a unique and critical position in the continuum of modern and contemporary photography due to the fact that his images are not manipulated in the darkroom, or by a computer, and instead show exactly what occurred in front of the lens at a certain point in time. The artist famously stated that “what happens inside the mind can happen inside the camera.”

Arno Rafael Minkkinen was born in 1945 in Helsinki, Finland, and moved with his family to America in 1951. He received his MFA in photography from Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. He is Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts and Docent at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Minkkinen’s work has been the subject of numerous solo museum exhibitions including venues such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; Musée de l’Élysée, Lausanne; Centre d’Art Santa Monica, Barcelona; Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Nice; Fotografiska Museet at Moderna Museet, Stockholm and Gallen-Kallela Museum, Helsinki.

His work is included in prestigious public and private collections around the globe, including the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

Minkkinen received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 2015, the Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2013 and the Finnish Art Prize in Photography in 2006.

Die Galerie Edwynn Houk freut sich die Vertretung des finnisch-amerikanischen Fotografen Arno Rafael Minkkinen, bekannt durch seine äusserst originellen Akt Selbstportraits, die meist in natürlichen Landschaften inszeniert werden, ankündigen zu dürfen. Eine bedeutende Selektion seiner Fotografien wird bis zum 20. Mai 2017 in der Galerie Edwynn Houk in Zürich ausgestellt sein.

Minkkinens bemerkenswerten schwarz-weiss Bilder zeigen Teile seines Körpers als abstrakte Formen in verschiedenen natürlichen oder bewohnten Orten überall auf der Welt. Seine Kamera fängt den Moment ein, in dem sein Körper von der Umgebung verändert und geprägt wird, das daraus resultierende Foto zeigt wie die Landschaft durch die Präsenz seines Körpers ebenfalls beeinflusst wurde. Minkkinens künstlerisches Werk umfasst surrealistische sowie expressionistische Elemente und nimmt eine wichtige und einzigartige Position im Verlauf der modernen und zeitgenössischen Fotografie ein, weil seine Bilder nicht in der Dunkelkammer oder auf dem Computer bearbeitet werden, stattdessen zeigen sie genau das was sich vor der Kamera zu einem gewissen Zeitpunkt ereignet hat. Der Künstler hat bekannterweise gesagt: “What happens inside the mind can happen inside the camera.”

Arno Rafael Minkkinen wurde 1945 in Helsinki, Finnland geboren und ist mit seiner Familie 1951 nach Amerika gezogen. Er erhielt seinen Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Fotografie an der Rhode Island School of Design wo er mit Harry Callahan und Aaron Siskind studiert hat. Er ist Professor für Kunst an der University of Massachusetts und als Dozent an der University of Art and Design Helsinki tätig.
