This survey includes five of Shirin Neshat’s acclaimed video environments accompanied by a series of related photographs. Although Neshat lives and works in the United States, her artwork explores issues of her native Iran and Islamic society, especially the position of women. Neshast uses powerfully cinematic images combined with careful choreography and mesmerizing music to create works that communicate universal ideas about how identity is shaped by differences in gender and culture. Organized by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in Quebéc, Canada. MAM’s coordinating curator is Lorie Mertes, Associate Curator. Upper Level Gallery.
