A Look at the Collection: Francesco Neri - Trophy and Treasure

One may view the individual photographs by Francesco Neri (*1982 in Faenza) as "trophies" or as "treasures". In his series, the photographic image shows itself in all of its cultural value. Neri presents it in a multitude of ways-as object, as a means of communication and document, as memento, as composition, as reproduction and transformation, and finally as an independent work of art.

Produced in the home of his grandparents, the series, of which about 30 exhibits have been selected for the exhibition, allows personal insight into the private and professional life of Francesco Neri's family. The areas of medicine (father and grandfather were physicians) and hunting play a particular role. There is hardly a photograph that does not exhibit traces of these activities. The images include both sensitive interiors in the manner of a classic still life as well as landscape photographs and views of nature. The portraits of his parents, which the photographer takes in everyday situations - observing them casually, as it were - testify to great closeness. Francesco Neri's photographs cast light on the metaphorical strength of the moment; the blurring of profession, family, and personal interest; as well as the entanglement of historical dimensions through the medium.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue (Verlag Snoeck).

Die einzelnen Photographien von Francesco Neri (*1982 in Faenza, Italien) mag man als "Trophäe" - Trophy - als auch als "Schatz" - Treasure - ansehen. In seiner Serie erweist sich das photographische Bild in all seiner kulturellen Kostbarkeit. Auf vielfältige Weise präsentiert Neri es als Objekt, als Kommunikationsmittel und Dokument, als Erinnerungsstück, als Komposition, als Reproduktion und Transformation, letztlich als freies Kunstwerk.

In der Wohnung seiner Großeltern entstanden, erlaubt die in der Ausstellung mit einer Auswahl von etwa 30 Exponaten repräsentierte Serie einen persönlichen Einblick in das private und berufliche Leben von Francesco Neris Familie. Eine besondere Rolle spielen dabei die Bereiche Medizin (Vater und Großvater waren Ärzte) und die Jagd. Kaum ein Bild, das nicht Spuren dieser Tätigkeiten aufweist. Sowohl feinfühlige Interieurs in der Manier eines klassischen Stilllebens, als auch landschaftliche Photographien und Naturansichten stehen in diesem Kontext. Von großer Nähe zeugen die Porträts seiner Eltern, die der Photograph in alltäglichen Situationen, quasi beiläufig beobachtend, im Bild festgehalten hat. Die Photographien von Francesco Neri verdeutlichen die metaphorische Stärke des Augenblicks, das Verschwimmen von Beruf, Familie und persönlichem Interesse ebenso wie die Verflechtung historischer Dimensionen durch das Medium.
